As you probably know we love Animal Collective here at BYT. They also love as back it seems, as evidenced by their willingness to go hiking with us, attend hockey games with us, go scuba diving with us and go do other stuff with us.

We also love 9:30 club here at BYT (there’s too many links here to share, trust us, but our Photo Section should offer ample examples of this feeling).

So, we naturally got pretty excited when we heard this AM (JUST NOW!) that Animal Collective will be releasing a Live at 9:30 Club Album on September 4th (coming full circle on their IMP love affair, what with Merriweather Post Pavillion previous love letter and all) recorded during their epic, three sold-out night run at the venue in 2013 ( were you there? we were there, because, as we mentioned, we love everything about this combo).

The release sees them play highlights such as “My Girls,” “What Would I Want? Sky,” “The Purple Bottle” from their decade plus career and will be available  as a limited edition hand-numbered 3xLP boxset to purchase online now exclusively from Animal Collective or Domino.     Best show at 9:30 may have been Major Lazer, Oct 2012. In the middle of the mob it was a circus of light and laser, crushed with confetti or Diplo walking on top of the crowd in a clear plastic ball. Sounded incredimazing, everybody hyped. https://youtu.be/ZRtGegcHNlY?t=1m55s

    So hard to pick a favorite of all time. Probably its TV On The Radio. Ended up getting right against the stage in front of Kyp Malone and Tunde. but who can forget the Dan Deacon show with the seriously trippy openers and the dance offs? Or the Courtney Barnett shows this summer with people throwing origami folded dollar bills during “Pedestrian at Best”? I think I have to stick with TV On the Radio, but there’s still a bunch of great shows coming up this year!

    Kishi Bashi was one of the few shows where I could hear a pin drop inside. Hearing “I Am the Antichrist To You” was one of the best live music moments I’ve gotten to experience.

    Around 2 a.m., while on a full stomach of $30-worth of McDonald’s, I received very concerned texts from my dad. Later that morning, I was handed my diploma at Constitution Hall in the best state possible – with glazed eyes and ink-stamped hands.
    For most of high school, the devout metal-head in me rejected most current-indie-whatever bands, until my bizarre, purple-sweatpants-wearing friend in government class started recommending me “actually good indie bands, (dude).” Between his rants on political happenings, sleeping, and Gameboy-playing, his bed-headed-self slowly converted me to his sonic realm. It wasn’t until later on, stumbling into class inexplicably sweaty, that he asked hurriedly if I wanted to go see Animal Collective and Dan Deacon at the 9:30 Club. Having listened to neither of those artists, nor having any concert experience, I felt obligated to accept, and figured why-the-hell-not for $20. I trusted my lovably weird friend and sought memorable experiences out of my senior year, so venturing into an unfamiliar place in D.C., late at night, before graduation day, for an “animal-what” band was perfect.
    Unfortunately, my friend from class was unable to make it until later that night, so I invited my friend Jeff along, who also didn’t know much about the band except some singles and an album or two. As Dan Deacon opened the night with his signature on-the-ground-dance-circle-ritual, in which the possessed tag the involuntary in-and-out of the sacrificial arena, we hid for cover in the mass of bodies. It wasn’t long, though, before Jeff and I, bewitched under Deacon’s tribal-electro-rave, were gazing into a tantalizing LOST-like Heart of The Island (or Club, whatever). In our enlightened trance, near-stage, we stood ready for engulfment, as Animal Collective’s stage-outlining teeth-projections came to life.
    Between pinpointing which band members were which and gawking at Danny Perez’s projections, everything around me curtly absorbed itself all into the other. Everyone on the same wavelength and quietly energized from the whole’s mutual infatuation with the present. No personal issues or insecurities here, just a blissful state of displacement, soaking up the moment. As I was new to this, the band seemed to materialize itself into an actual life form, not just a folder of mp3s and album artwork to be stared at, blankly. There were bursting moments like “Peacebone,” jump-starting retaliation against inhibitions, and “I Think I Can” marching assuredly into meditations, or “Did You See the Words?” flickering unknown curiosities into vivid dreams. Recognizable songs embodied themselves as old friends and I anxiously waited for more to show up, perhaps with different structures or demeanors. Songs I’d never met before then left lasting impressions, begging to be sought out again. Suddenly, a band I hardly knew ascended to a beloved, solely off a live-impression, stripping away any preconceived notions I had of concerts. Every facet of the music had so much more passion, color, and means of affection. An explosive encore of “The Purple Bottle” into “Brothersport” paraded the scene one last time, before club lights unveiled us back to our true realities and spoiled the fun. I had totally lost myself for two hours and all that was left was a deep-seeded joy; whether that joy was from high school finally being over, or not, it revitalized me and the concert was more than worthwhile. Eventually, Jeff and I met up with my friend from class and got some McDonalds for the ride home, reminding ourselves that we still had to find our caps and gowns and be out the door again in a few hours.
    Since that night, I’ve become a dedicated concert-goer at countless different venues, and Animal Collective has been my favorite band – all because of “that kid” in class, whose cringe-inducing rants, which I enjoyed for being particularly clever, had everyone else red in embarrassment. Centipede Hz is a portal to those summer days with my friends, the 9:30 Club, Big Macs, and the comforting evening humidity of the DMV.

    Bloc Party in 2012. The band was totally in sync with the crowd, and we were all singing and dancing as one. Such a magical energy.

    The Disco Biscuits, 10/3/09. Fantastic show with some of my closest friends. I drove across the country for a job in Los Angeles the following day, and I’m still here. I can’t imagine a better sendoff than this show at one of my favorite east coast venues.

    Without doubt, Ty Segall blowing kisses and minds after Manipulator was released. As the ruckus picked up, a new friend rounded up a group of folks to lift me and give me my first crowd surfing experience. Ty noticed.

    I felt messianic as the band strummed a thumping cry to bring my to the back of the room, where I spun around on the hands holding me high. I assumed I would be dropped in the back, but Ty suddenly flipped a switch and began screaming “BRING HIM BAAAACCCKK!”. I was whooshed back to the stage, locking eyes with Ty before being dumped in front of his mic. When I looked at the crowd, a kind man said to me softly, “Jump back in.” I was happy to oblige.

    My favorite show at the 930 club was the one that never happened. I was at the Animal Collective show on 6/10, that the power went out and the giant blow up mouth they had on stage started collapsing from the rafters. Not only did the power go out, but the A/C turned off on a hot and muggy DC summer night. The only thing that saved me was the fact that I had about 25 dollars cash in my pocket and could down a few beers, while waiting about 1.5 hours until the show was officially cancelled. Life goes on, and hopefully Animal Collective will be back in town for another great show.

    Other than that, I would have to say that the Alabama Shakes were on of the best concerts I’ve seen at 930.

    Deerhunter in the fall of 2010. Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt were just mesmerizing that night with extended versions of already amazing songs like “Helicopter” “Nothing Ever Happened” “Desire Lines” and “He Would Have Laughed.” I listen to the NPR live stream of that show at least once a year to relive that magical night.

    Kraftwerk. One of the first electronic acts I ever listened to, formative for so many fans of electronic music and the genre as a whole, brought to life in 3D with frightening German precision.

    My first show at the old 930 of course! Soul Side, Token Entry, and Agent Orange. I was 13 and went with my older brother. I thought I was the coolest kid in the world.

    Being a huge fan of led Zeppelin, nirvana & kyuss but too young to see them live, I was most excited to see them crooked vultures in 2009. The bands coming into being was something that I followed intensely and when an album and tour was announced I had to see them. I knew the super group wouldn’t be playing long so it really was a once in a lifetime chance to see them. Of course it sold in minutes and I had to look to Craigslist to get the tickets, which I gladly paid. The show was amazing, like a vintage queens of the Stone Age show with grohl on ten drums with John Paul fucking jones playing bass! I’m local and josh homme even pointed out to Dave that this was a local show for him. Best show I’ve seen and I’m sure I’ll never see them again.

    I was at the last show of their three night run at 9:30, and it could not have been a more perfect show. Best opening act I’ve ever seen, Dan Deacon, who I had never heard of before but is now one of my favorite musicians. That show changed my life.

    Pavement as a teenager at 930… because Pavement, also because first concert ever! Seeing Animal Collective was also awesome and there was that one time in college that we put on a last minute show (featuring Animal Collective and others) in a sculpture studio and Panda Bear slept on our dorm room floor.

    Seeing Animal Collective at 930 December 1st 2013. It was my 7th time seeing them and I finally dragged 5 of my close friends to the show 3 of which were supposed to see the show the night the power went out at 930 in June. The opened with Did You See The Words and the show was awesome and 4 of the 5 became fans and we saw Geo after the show and he chatted for a little while and was super sweet as always. It was a good.

    My favorite show at 930 Club was Marilyn Manson in 1996 on his Dead to the World tour. They were still playing a lot of songs from their debut album, but were also playing Antichrist Superstar live. The production was incredible! Huge podium, insane lighting and costumes, and Manson ripping up a Bible and tossing it into the audience. Very intense! The bassist, Twiggy, was so out of his mind intoxicated, drugged, etc. that the only thing holding him upright was the speaker cabinets on the side of the stage. He had the long strand of drool hanging from his nose and mouth from the first song to the last. My friend and I were convinced that he was dead or dying. He didn’t play a single note. Just stood there motionless and drooling with his eyes closed. Also, someone brought there grandmother in the mosh pit and let her throw a few elbows. None of this is made up and that is why it’s not only my favorite 930 Club show ever, but favorite concert of all time! So I can thank Manson and 930 Club for that experience.

    My favorite show at 930 club was THIS SHOW!!! Animal Collective and Dan Deacon on the same bill was too good to pass up, and I am so flippin happy that I went! and now I never have to forget that night :DDD
