I thought I was just going to see Anais Mitchell sing at Sixth & I Synagogue last Sunday but as it turns out I was confused and had actually gone to see her folk opera “Hadestown.” This change of events could not have been better. “Hadestown” was absolutely fantastic and I even ended up buying their CD after the show which for me is a pretty rare occurrence.

The opera follows a variation on the Ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where Orpheus must embark on a quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld. It is set in a post-apocalyptic, depression era America. In relation to the story, the part of Orpheus is played by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Persephone is played by Ani DiFranco, Hades is played by Greg Brown, Hermes is played by Ben Knox of the Low Anthem and Eurydice is played by Anais herself.

The show itself was really wonderful, so many people were packed onto the small stage playing beautiful music and having the time of their lives. Check out Anais’ “Hadestown” website.
