I’ve long been a fan of Allen Tate’s voice – it’s one of the most recognizable baritones in the music industry, almost as distinctive as The National’s Matt Berninger. As vocalist for San Fermin, Tate’s voice soars over ornate indie rock and chamber pop arrangements; although it remains a powerful force, it’s rarely the focus of attention. His new solo record, In The Waves, brings us Tate in a new, more intimate context.

The next single, “Your Love is Enough” serves as a perfect showcase for his unmistakably rich, warming growl to fill the air over finger-picked and slide guitars. Accompanied by San Fermin bandmate Claire Wellin and subtle string swells, it’s a track that reminds you of sitting by a fireplace in the dead of winter, the smells of firewood and sweet smoke, basking safely in the glow.

In The Waves will be released May 3 on Sleep Well Records.
