D.J. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime” is a classic hit that never ceases to remind me of how good it feels to do absolutely nothing. Speaking of classics, a lot of old-school shoe brands have either re-released or reinvented their version of the high-top sneaker. So in the spirit of the shoe and the song, here are four outfits that provide “just a little somethin’ to break the monotony”:
1. Tanks fr th Mmrs.
Fall Out Boy references aside, looser tanks (or modified t-shirts) have always kept dudes cool, especially when worn with a vintage cap and cut-off jean shorts. The generally preferred length for jean shorts is a little bit above the knee, and a sick pair of sneakers ensures that the heat on your body remains on your feet.
Summer was made for short-sleeve wovens, whether it’s a classic cut from Fred Perry or something new from a collective like Band of Outsiders. Gingham seems to be the current pattern of choice though, and a subtly-colored shirt like this one goes especially well with a crisp pair of white sneakers and dark jeans. Be extra careful with raw denim though, unless you’ve worn them for more than a few months, they WILL bleed and ruin your kicks.
3. The Wide Stripes and Fresh Prints.
Avoid looking like a prisoner, mime, or Waldo by wearing wider stripes in bolder colors. Guys can also get in the animal-print fun with a wide selection of sneakers, like the Nike Safari Pack or these rather reptilian Puma First Rounds. MAJOR also released a variety of fitted caps in an elephant print pattern, inspired by the Jordan III.
Of course, there are those rare, rather breezy summer days that are too warm for a hoodie and too cold for just a t-shirt, so a windbreaker provides the perfect balance, and also gives a throwback to the early-90s hip-hop scene (, but please, please leave the parachute pants at home, combining super-bright accessories with subdued colors (like these plaid shorts) create a unique look that won’t blind the people that look at you. Lastly, can I just say how glad I am that the Reebok Pump is being released in a variety of really nice colorways?
