Last week was craft beer week in DC which was celebrated by many at various events through the week. On Friday I got to experience both Dogfish Head and Magic Hat for a night with two of my favorite craft breweries.

First stop of the night was D’Vines in Columbia Heights, a beer and wine store with a great selection and helpful staff when looking for specialties. Dogfish creator Sam Calagione was signing books, available for purchase at the store, and other random Dogfish paraphernalia while he chatted up the guests. The place was packed with known beer lovers and small samples of Dogfish’s 18% Fort were available while you were waiting. After talking to Sam for a few minutes it is obvious why Dogfish is one of my top breweries.

Pick up Dogfish beer at numerous DC locations and if you’re up for a trip, there are local alehouses in Falls Church and Fairfax, VA as well as Gaithersburg, MD. A daytrip to Delaware will take you to their main brewery in Milton and restaurant and distillery in Rehoboth.

A short walk down 14th street took us to Policy where Magic Hat founders Renee and Alan Newman were hosting a free beer dinner along with the weekly party Pregame. There was a cheap cover for a souvenir glass and one of three Magic Hat beers with additional beers, including their popular #9, for a well-worth-it $3. Sam from Dogfish had told us to say “hi” to Alan in a friendly way which made me ask Alan if they spend their lives traveling the world enjoying beer and beer lovers. His answer: “I live a good life”.

Magic Hat is a bit further with their brewery in South Burlington, VT but can be found all over the place.
