Welcome to A Pumpkin A Day, our new series highlighting the finest in fake pumpkin flavors! Beginning mid-September and running through whenever grocery stores and cafes stop selling pumpkin flavored seasonal treats, we’ll highlight one pointlessly pumpkin product per day.

Today is a day I have been looking forward to since we grabbed our bag of Trader Joe’s goodies. It’s Pecan Pumpkin Instant Oatmeal day.

I am a massive oatmeal obsessive. I frequently choose to eat oatmeal for dinner, not just because I’m in college, but because I love it. My hopes are very high going into this taste test, but I’m not sure Trader Joe’s can deliver.

It turns out I was wrong to doubt Mr. Joe. He came through with this oatmeal. It almost makes that garbage brittle worth it.

This scent is right on the mark. It smells how you would want pecan pumpkin oatmeal to smell. It smells like the feeling of November.

I was suspicious about the promise of pecans because of the offensive lack of walnuts in the pumpkin caramel corn that I will never forget. But the oatmeal delivered. There were lovely bite sized chunks of pecan in each spoonful.

Of the foods we’ve sampled so far, this has the strongest pumpkin flavor, but it’s still pretty subtle. In fact, I would say that this tastes more like pecan pie oatmeal than pumpkin oatmeal, but that’s definitely not a bad thing.

img_6529-jpgAside from the delicious flavor, my favorite thing about this product is the complete lack of puns on the packaging. Oatmeal knows what it is. Oatmeal is humble. It doesn’t need flashy puns or copper kettles, it just needs oats and seasonal flavoring.

Pumpkin essence: 6. Not super pumpkin-y but the flavor is definitely there.
Mouthfeel: 10. Well-rolled oats, nice crunchy pecans, nothing too fancy.
Right to Exist: 10. I love this. I could eat boxes and boxes of this year round.
Feel of Fall: 8. It tastes like thanksgiving because of the pie undertones, but I don’t think this oatmeal should limit itself to fall.
