Welcome to A Pumpkin A Day, our new series highlighting the finest in fake pumpkin flavors! Beginning mid-September and running through whenever grocery stores and cafes stop selling pumpkin flavored seasonal treats, we’ll highlight one pointlessly pumpkin product per day.

Finally, we’ve hit the one and only pumpkin product that really counts- pumpkin pie. Obviously tiny pies are less thrilling than the full sized original, but these are pre-made and hand held and you can eat them straight out of the freezer, though you’re supposed to thaw them and ideally heat them. We tried them both ways because some days I just don’t have the motivation to work a toaster.

Just from looking at these coming out of the box I did not trust them. I’m not someone who fawns over arbitrarily tiny things, and frankly a lot of tiny things creep me out, like very small dogs for example. So these made me sad. I was worried that they’d be overly sweet and super doughy.

That was not the case. These are really good. I heated up half of them in a toaster oven and left the others room temperature. The hot ones were definitely better as the filling and dough got softer, but the cold ones were more than acceptable.

They fall apart a lot, especially the hot ones, but taste amazing. The pastry itself isn’t sweet which I appreciate, and the chunks of sugar are a nice touch that add a classy vibe. I would not be mad to see these on a Thanksgiving table, but because of how cute the crust is shaped you pretend you made these. Don’t even try, no one will believe you.

Even the cold ones are kind of falling apart but they’re more hand held. They also taste really good. Less good than warm but that’s true of almost everything except ice cream.

The pumpkin filling is nice and traditional. I would be good with eating a lot of these. I wish there was more filling as the ratio of filling to crust is off from a normal pumpkin pie since these kind of have a top crust and normal pumpkin pie doesn’t. Although the crust is delicious there should be a third more filling.

These would be good festive drunk food. I would absolutely come home from a night out and eat all six of these straight out of my fridge. Since these come from the freezer it might be a good idea to stock up on them for Black Friday, New Years and so on.img_6850-jpg
