Welcome to A Pumpkin A Day, our new series highlighting the finest in fake pumpkin flavors! Beginning mid-September and running through whenever grocery stores and cafes stop selling pumpkin flavored seasonal treats, we’ll highlight one pointlessly pumpkin product per day.
Ahh soup. Soup is such a fall food that I’m surprised Starbucks doesn’t sell a PS(L) lunch deal where you get a Pumpkin Spice Latte and a cup of pumpkin soup. Maybe they don’t do it because soup’s not a particularly attractive food. Also, that’s a lot of hot pumpkin liquids for one sitting. Anyway, today I’m trying the Imagine Pumpkin Creamy Soup and I feel fine about it. Pretty much all squash/pumpkin soups taste the same to me so this will be at least okay.
Right off the bat, pouring it out of the container, the soup is way more vibrant that I expected. It’s so orange, it’s a little off-putting. However, I think the color toned down post-microwave, but I may just be seeing what I want to see.
It smells right. It smells exactly how pumpkin soup should smell, it’s got a little pumpkin and a little spice. It’s very nice and subtle.
Taste-wise it’s good. I would say it’s close to the ideal form of what it is. I always find creamy soups bland because I like to have a lot of textures and flavors happening at once. That said, this does what it should, and it does it well. I do wish it was a little thicker and I think it would taste really good with some Cholula to add some more depth of flavor, but I eat Cholula on almost everything savory so that might just be my addiction talking.
All in all, I wouldn’t be mad if a restaurant gave this to me because I cant tell the different between good and bad pumpkin soups. If you told me you made this from scratch I would think you wasted your time, but I would believe you. I would also eat the whole bowl.
After the warm taste test I decided to try the soup cold just for kicks. It definitely feels thinner but still tastes fine. If bullies made you chug this you’d be okay. It goes down really smoothly.
Pumpkin essence – 8. Still don’t know what a real pumpkin tastes like, but this tastes how pumpkin soup should taste.
Mouthfeel- 9. Very soup-like. I took off 1 point because I prefer chunky soups.
Diabetes factor – 1. Soup is healthy, right?
Right to exist – 8. Easy, tasty soup. As long as you heat it up, this would not be a sad dinner.
Feel of fall – 9. Pumpkins = fall. Soup = fall. You do the math.
