Welcome to A Pumpkin A Day, our new series highlighting the finest in fake pumpkin flavors! Beginning mid-September and running through whenever grocery stores and cafes stop selling pumpkin flavored seasonal treats, we’ll highlight one pointlessly pumpkin product per day.

Whole Foods 365 Organic Low Fat Pumpkin Spice Yogurt. What a mouthful. I like yogurt, I like pumpkin, let’s see how this marriage turns out.

I’m hoping this tastes like the Jamba Juice Pumpkin Smash Smoothie that I used to drink obsessively in middle school and early high school, but I think this will be way milder. I feel like this is something yuppie moms will give their babies so the babies get invested in pumpkin spice from the start.

The smell is nice. It smells like regular vanilla yogurt for the most part.
At first I thought the yogurt was so tasteless and spice-less that they may have mislabeled/mis-packaged it. Turns out that that was just user error and that they should label the product more clearly because all the pumpkin sauce is on the bottom.

Once I stirred it up, the taste of pumpkin became evident. The syrup/sauce is pretty tasty, but it’s a lot more acidic than I’m used to for pumpkin flavored products. It’s a nice, subtle, seasonal way to start your day. A fun change up from honey or raspberry jam.

If I had to take a wild and crazy guess I would say this is the most natural pumpkin spice product we’ve seen. So in that regard, it’s a winner. In any other way, it’s fairly average. Not bad, not very good. If it were in my fridge I would eat it for breakfast if I didn’t have plain yogurt or oatmeal.

Overall, it’s fine and I would eat it again, but it’s not my first choice for either yogurt or pumpkin spice.

Pumpkin essence – 7. I think this tastes like a real pumpkin, not artificial pumpkin flavor, so if that’s what you’re looking for you’ll be sad, but if you have an open mind, this is nice.
Mouthfeel- 4. I strongly prefer the thicker texture of Greek yogurt to the runny texture of normal yogurt, so this was not my ideal texture.
Diabetes factor – 7. There’s always more sugar in natural foods than you’d think, and one tub of this has 22 grams, which is 10 grams more than in a serving of Pumpkin Spice Oreos (but that’s only 2 cookies). Don’t trick yourself, you could still lose a foot on Whole Foods Yogurt.
Right to exist – 5. It’s fine. It’s seasonal, it’s a nice snack if you really love yogurt.
Feel of fall – 4. Everything tastes too natural to bring out that sickly sweet fall taste that we love, even with all the added sugar.
