My favorite thing to do is to make recommendations. If I could give everyone in the world my phone number and have them text me whenever they needed something specific (a date night restaurant in D.C., a Czech new wave film for a casual Saturday night in). I would do it. While I love talking about food and art and fashion and music and anything else under the umbrella of pop culture, I really excel at talking about horror movies. I should have a PhD in talking about horror movies. So I’m putting my knowledge to good use and recommending at least one horror movie a day throughout the month of October. Grab my hand and let me be your guide through some spooky cinema.
THE MOVIE: The Perfection
THE STREAMING SERVICE: Netflix
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT: The Perfection is one of the most bonker movies I’ve ever seen. It’s got some weird star power in the form of Allison Williams (who plays a musical prodigy / the films main protagonist) and Logan Browning (who is also a musical prodigy), plus a healthy helping of body horror, comedy and revenge. If jump scares are too much for you, The Perfection is safe, although there are some gross out moments. Williams and Huffman also both play queer characters, and since most horror movies are blandly straight, it’s nice to see some representation.
I’VE ALREADY SEEN THAT MOVIE, PLEASE SIR CAN I HAVE SOME MORE?: Okay, okay. If you want to know what movie I’m watching tonight (I try to do all new to me films for the month of October), I’m probably going to give into my baser tendencies and watch Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (which is steaming on Shudder). I can’t help it. I love a good haunted house and the first movie was pretty good. If you haven’t seen Hell House LLC (and you like found footage / haunted house style movies), start there.
