My favorite thing to do is to make recommendations. If I could give everyone in the world my phone number and have them text me whenever they needed something specific (a date night restaurant in D.C., a Czech new wave film for a casual Saturday night in). I would do it. While I love talking about food and art and fashion and music and anything else under the umbrella of pop culture, I really excel at talking about horror movies. I should have a PhD in talking about horror movies. So I’m putting my knowledge to good use and recommending at least one horror movie a day throughout the month of October. Grab my hand and let me be your guide through some spooky cinema.

THE MOVIE: The Nightmare

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT: This was one of the scariest movies (if not the scariest movie) I watched in 2015 and what makes it all the more effective is the fact that it’s real. Directed by Rodney Ascher (who you may know from the doc Room 237), The Nightmare is a surreal look into the world of sleep paralysis. It features interviews from people who suffer with sleeping issues as well as bizarre recreations of their nightmares that break the wall between reality and fiction. It’s a wild ride that will make you afraid to fall asleep.

Have any questions about the content of the movie? Does The Dog Die and Unconsenting Media are great resources for looking up spoiler free triggers before you watch this film (or any film).

I’VE ALREADY SEEN THAT MOVIE, PLEASE SIR CAN I HAVE SOME MORE?: I have a lot of movies to catch up on (I had to take a short break during the Bentzen Ball), so tonight I’m looking to watch something easy, breezy, beautiful, Covergirl. For me, that means a movie that’s no longer than 90 minutes and isn’t subtitled (so if I drift off, I haven’t missed too much). Shudder has added a few new titles over the last few days and Haunt, by my boy Eli Roth, looks pretty promising. It clocks in at 92 minutes and is all about an extreme haunted house. As long as there aren’t too many spiders in this one (you see a few in the trailer), I’ll probably check this one out.
