2016 Style Round-Up: By The Pros
BYT Staff | Dec 27, 2016 | 9:00AM |

Well, hello there! So, with all the respect as we have for your style obsessions, we decided that instead of some weak-ish/subjective “THIS IS WHAT WE THINK IS BEST IN DC STYLE” round up, we should ask some of our favorite professionally stylish ladies around town what the highlights and lowlights of 2016, as well as what they’re looking forward to in 2017. After all a dozen or so minds and taste levels are better than one. Consider this your ultimate insider’s guide/style cheat sheet (plus hey-some great last min NYE outfit inspirations too hidden in there), and also, feel free to post your favorites in the comments.

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.

I like some of the oversized silhouettes. It’s a nice change and exudes ease. Also like the upmarket street wear. It’s fashion that reaches people where they live but looks polished. I hate yoga pants anywhere but the gym.

What item could you not live without this year?

Oh I hate to think any object is THAT important! But my dog Oscar is my essential non-human.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

No picking favorites.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

I’m not a vintage/thrift shop girl. I don’t have the patience.

Best DC place to style watch?

Union Station. You get tourists, locals, teenagers all at their least self-conscious.

What are your favorite blogs and magazines for style inspiration?

Houzz.com, Elle Decor and Architectural Digest. I get enough fashion news in my professional life. I like interiors during my downtime.

Must click on Instagrams?

None.

Which celebrity killed it in the fashion game this year? (photos encouraged!)

Who knows? But I nominate Solange Knowles’ stylist for most interesting taste.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

Not picking favorites.

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

Probably the range of new designers at labels. It’ll be interesting to see what they can do. And whether J. Crew can pull itself out of its financial hole.

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.

Favorites: Bell Sleeves. Fur shoes. Skinny overalls. Body suitsVarious Key Tags and other unnecessarily indulgent key chains. Least Favorites: Controversial, but I am just not fully here for the full-on resurgence of the 90’s. Why do we need to see the velvet mock-neck crop top again?

What item could you not live without this year?

My trusty Stan Smiths. And Lululemon’s Inspire legging! Someone far cooler than me told me they looked like Alexander Wang at a photo shoot once, and I’ve worn them to pretty much every shoot we’ve had since.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

Favorite places to shop in DC: Zara, Redeem, and the Lord & Taylor in Chevy Chase. No one ever remembers it’s there, which means everything is always on sale and in my size. Online: It doesn’t get faster or easier than ASOS (I have this dress and this dress in multiple colors). 2016 was also the year our former Design Editor Hillary Kelly introduced me to Modern Citizen and Finery and I can’t. Stop. Scrolling. Oak + Fort is also great for basics

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

How do I even answer this now that we’re losing Nomad Yard? That place was a gem and I will miss, miss, miss it.

Best DC place to style watch?

I have two different answers to this. The first is any exercise class that costs above $24 per class (girls come in in bras, tanks, and leggings cooler than anything I ever wore to anything in my early 20’s), and the second is the line outside Marvin on a Friday or Saturday night. Say what you want about the bar, but the kids waiting to get in KILL it. I’ll sometimes go out of my way on a walk home (from a much less crowded bar, because I’m old) just to see what they’re wearing.

What are your favorite blogs and magazines for style inspiration?

Blogs: Petite Flower Presents (Holly was our September cover girl!) and I still love Meg Biram (this outfit is an all-time fave). Magazine-wise, I’m still an InStyle and People Style Watch kind of girl. I’ve never really liked looking at pages filled with things I can’t afford.

Must click on instagrams?

Grit & Grace may be an event planning firm, but I LIVE for the outfit sneak peeks on their Insta stories. Tuckernuck is also a guilty (preppy) pleasure, and Morgan Stewart Fitzpatrick is just a guilty pleasure, period. Oh, the things I would do to look this good in kick flares.

Which celebrity killed it in the fashion game this year? (photos encouraged!)

Sarah Paulson in green. Melissa McCarthy in yellow.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

Washingtonian’s Style Setters list this year was really, really strong. I’ll be keeping my eye on Michael Dumlao and Joanna Rosholm especially in 2017, and for very different style reasons. He is never not 110 percent himself, which can’t be always be easy when you’re such a creative spirit AND the driving force behind a brand as conservative as Booz Allen, and, as Michelle Obama’s outgoing press secretary, she’s going to have options galore for her next move. I hope she stays in the city, but I guess we will see. And I say this all the time, but more attention must be paid to the wedding and event planners of this city! Never am I not impressed by the outfits at every single wedding industry event.

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

This Henri Bendel purse is #1 on my holiday list, and I’ve rented these Lele Sadoughi earrings from RTR so many times I’m thinking it’s time to permanently add a pair to my collection. In DC, I am counting down the literal days until COS and & Other Stories open in Georgetown. I’m so excited that I honestly even debated not re-sharing the links here, because I want all the clothes for myself.

Meg Biram

Instagram: @megbiram – 37.8k followers

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.
Fave: Love the oversized sweater and pleated skirt trend. Love shearling. Love dark florals. I like off the shoulder but it just go so overdone. Love turtlenecks and long sleeves and long dresses. All about the mule flats. Love all things masculine and minimal.

Least Fave: Only certain people could pull off the cropped flare jean — with or without a fringy hem. I was only a fan of that trend on some people. Chokers were similar, I like the classy ones, but not the plastic ones from my childhood. Not a fan of the David Bowie platform boots. And I hope neon never comes back.

What item could you not live without this year?
My Illesteva Milan II sunglasses and my Michael Kors black toe ring sandals that I wore ALL SUMMER LONG. They were simple, modern, comfortable and went with everything. Wore them all over Spain and Morocco.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?
I do most of my shopping online — Shopbop, Nordstrom, ASOS. But I frequently stop by into Vince, AllSaints, CUSP, Intermix, ZARA, Rag & Bone, Redeem, and Club Monaco.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?
Nomad Yard but I think they just closed. 🙁

Best DC place to style watch?
Events!

What are your favorite blogs and magazines for style inspiration?
How much time do you have?
Magazines: Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Porter, Marie Claire, and Vogue.
Blogs, there are just so many, and most of them I follow on Instagram — see next question.

Must click on Instagrams?
I follow a bunch of art, travel, fashion, food, and interiors on Instagram. Some of my faves are:
@brothervellies
@dylanlex
@christianespangsberg
@andicsinger
@tappancollective
@kellywearstler

Which celebrity killed it in the fashion game this year?
Honestly, I don’t follow a ton of celebrity style. I tend to look at bloggers, designers, and some of the models.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?
Nadine always looks chic when I go to get my hair done by Winston.
Desiree is always wearing something amazing.
Kate has some fierce items in her wardrobe.

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?
This is the first year I’ve been excited about winter. The coats, the big sweaters, the hats, the boots, the dresses — I’m just excited for all of it. Just got these Alexander Wang studded pumps and I can’t wait to wear them to everything. I also just got some great jewelry from Soko I’m excited to wear.

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016?

I was happily on the receiving end of every Instagram eyebrow, each Adidas stripe, and all the neutral bomber jackets the universe threw in my line of vision this year. See also: embroidered anything. Dislikes? I think I’ve aged out of actively advocating against ANYTHING that floats anyone’s boat. I also love mom jeans, dad jeans, and clogs with socks, so far be it for me to get sniffy against, like, a crop top.

What item could you not live without this year?

It’s a tie between the leather Harley Davidson jacket I found at a thrift mall in North Carolina…and Crest White Strips (bc I also cannot live without coffee + red wine).

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

There’s a ton of indie retail to love on in this city, and I’m glad, too, for the national + international options we’ve got alongside them. In terms of 2016 frequency, I was probably most often at Meeps, Madewell, and Steadfast Supply.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Meeps + Treasury combining under one roof was a 2016 bonus. Also/newer on my radar: I scored a great men’s aviator jacket at Bespoke Not Broke (in the Anacostia Arts Center) early this year. It’s a really fun jumble of vintage clothing + accessories.

Best DC place to style watch?

The Transformer Auction is always E P I C !

Must click on Instagrams?

SO MANY, but I’m going to limit myself to just three, all local + all style-centric: @afrovelvet – Malissa Wilkins crushes it, style- and project-wise: @fancymuffin – Fei Mancho is such a fun follow!
@s3active – ATHLEISURE OVERLOAD (in the very best way)

Which celebrity killed it in the fashion game this year? (photos encouraged!)

Mandy Moore = #hairgoals / S O L A N G E = #donttouchmyhairgoals (slash #wardrobedreams) / annnnnnnd Eva Chen (#always).

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

Malissa Wilkins (again and for the win), Redeem‘s Lori Parkerson (I think I namecheck her every year, but it’s for good reason), Damon King (#styleicon in the making), Premium Co/Rock Creek Social Club‘s U N K L E  S C O O T Y, Shopkeeper’s Gallery‘s Seda Nak, Tasha from The Glossier, and OMG there are like a hundred more but I gotta stop somewhere.

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

Let me not pass up an opportunity to attempt to verbalize into existence a synergy between the creative community, the city, and DC developers that creates more of the affordable, long-term space that’s necessary to support a vibrant + varied retail + arts landscape. THAT WOULD BE SO EXCITING! I’D GET DRESSED UP EVERY DAY FOR THAT!

What item could you not live without this year?

Levi 511 Commuter Jeans in Black. The absolute best jeans to ever be made.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

I search for a lot of second hand leather finds on Ebay. Measure everything, and you’ll know if it fits or not. That’s the real secret.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Buffalo Exchange.

Best DC place to style watch?

My favorite place to watch style, 14th street in the summer.

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.

Favorite: Definitely a focus on comfort and flats. Also I got very into the 90s trends (chokers, ADIDAS, etc.) In terms of brands, Gucci totally dominated game, hands down. Least favorite: Grunge – looking at you, whitewashed denim.

What item could you not live without this year?

For clothing, I must say my fleece-lined leggings or my Sophie Blake accessories. Other than that, truly, my iPhone. I love capturing little moments of inspiration during my day – the morning light hitting a monument or the perfect latte art / breakfast scenario (much to the chagrin of my Instagram husband) 😉

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

There are a few I go to time after time: Wylie Grey (for casual, cool west coast vibes), Lynn Louisa (for a more curated LA-style shopping experience in Georgetown), Sophie Blake (for all my favorite jewelry), South Moon Under (for affordable, quality pieces and the BEST gift selection!), and Take 5 Boutique (for the finer things in life!)

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Current Boutique is one of my favorite spots!

Best DC place to style watch?

CityCenter is great for style watching – and dreaming!

What are your favorite blogs and magazines for style inspiration?

I really love Who What Wear and Refinery29. For magazines, Darling is my favorite.

Must click on instagrams?

@erinkrespan for ALL the coffee photos, @adailysomething for home/food/life goals @tamon_ for the best city shots and @thefashionablybroke for all-things-style

Which celebrity killed it in the fashion game this year? (photos encouraged!)

I don’t keep up with celebrities so much, but I do feel we have our own little DC celebrity in Monling Lee. She’s worked with J.Crew, Refinery 29 and was just featured by Coveter.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

I can’t get enough of Anchyi Wei, Natalie Pinto and Sara Azani

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

During fashion week this past fall, we saw a lot more romance in style, ruffles, soft colors – I’m very into that!

Favorite: chokers, cropped, fringed denim, silk bombers, oversized sleeves, and button-downs. Least-favorite: back-less loafers/the infamous Gucci fur slides – Not. A. Fan.

What item could you not live without this year?

My Celine belt bag – a big (big) investment but I have zero regrets.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

Salt & Sundry, Redeem, Genuine People, Mango, Net-a-Porter

Best DC place to style watch?

14th street, Union Market

What are your favorite blogs and magazines for style inspiration?

W Magazine, always. I think the bar has been raised to near-magazine quality for blogs, too. I’ve been a long-time fan of Park & Cube for Shini’s incredible photo shoots and stunning animated graphics.

Bella Hadid – I mean, killing it. She brings back ’90s nostalgia in the best possible way. Kendall Jenner – uggh, I can’t even handle the Kardashians, but she’s totally won me over (fashion-wise).

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

Anchyi Wei – I think I’ve mentioned her before but she always has such fun ensembles!

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

More shirt dressing/button-downs, bold stripes, flared pants.

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016?

I’m biased but – I’m glad the natural hair trend has still been going strong this year. I can’t see it dying out any time soon.

What item could you not live without this year?

All of my skin-tight turtlenecks and high-waisted trousers. That was my look in the early spring, and also this fall, and now this winter.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

asos.comnastygal.com, and Zara. My style is very minimalistic (most of the time).

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

I still don’t go thrifting!

Best DC place to style watch?

My neighborhood: Columbia Heights. Hang around 14th & Irving between 3-6 pm and you’ll be entertained, trust me.

I gotta say it… Solange! Love the message behind her latest album and everything she stands for. And of course her style.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

I really like @glenncontreras‘s style. I’ve followed him for a while, and then I bumped into him over by 9th & U not too long ago, so I introduced myself. He’s super cool (so is his dog). I also like Jeimy (@moonrisedistrict).

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

I’m excited about something I plan on adding to my personal wardrobe: sneakers. I don’t really own any, so I want to start a new trend for myself. Currently trying to decide between Nike and Adidas.

Tasha James, The Glossier

Instagram: @theglossier – 3,270

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.

I really love that the 90s came back in full force this past year. Everything made a comeback, from huge logos, to chokers, to baby doll dresses, and grunge—even the Spice Girls nearly made a comeback for their 20th anniversary—it was like being in middle school all over again, and I wasn’t mad at it. I don’t really have a least favorite trend, I just hate seeing people wear the same exact outfit as someone else—fashion becomes less fun when everyone starts copying each other—take inspiration, and then evolve it in a way that’s unique to you!

What item could you not live without this year?

I can’t live without denim. I wear jeans nearly every day, and it never gets boring/old for me.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

I’m an online shopping addict. I frequent anything from Shopbop to Ebay. I love avoiding crowds, and when packages show up that I forgot I ordered, it’s like a mini-Christmas.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Love Buffalo Exchange & Reddz Trading in Georgetown. Unique Thrift Store out in Falls Church, VA is also a favorite, it’s massive, so set aside a few hours to browse.

Best DC place to style watch?

Downtown is great because you get a good mix of everyone, lots of styles intersect, from quirky, to trendy, to very put together, it’s all really great. The other day, around lunchtime, I saw a woman in full sequins, and leopard print, and the way she owned it made her look absolutely glorious—no one else could pull it off, but her lack of f*cks was refreshing.

What are your favorite blogs and magazines for style inspiration?

I love Karla’s Closet, because she wears a lot of thrifted and DIY pieces, and styles them effortlessly. She’s great, because if you don’t have a lot of money, but are willing to think out of the box, she gives you lots of ideas on how to take something super basic/inexpensive, and really rock it. I try to do the same thing with my blog, I feel like it’s not always about having the newest thing, it’s about taking what you have, or can easily access, and doing something interesting with it.

In general, I love the International versions of major magazines, for example, Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia, and Vogue Japan are so good! Vogue US plays it too safe these days. The editorials in the international editions are much more interesting, and risky—I love getting ideas for photoshoots, or styling ideas from them.

Must click on instagrams?

Mine? JK.

I love following Instagram accounts where a person is very committed to a theme, @love_aesthetics is the monochrome queen, I don’t even think color exists in her world. I’m obsessed with @thedogist, it’s like Humans of New York, except for dogs—so, it’s basically perfection. If you’re a beauty junkie, but can’t stand to look at another smokey eye/liquid lip combo, @patmcgrathreal is an actual breath of fresh air (also, she’s a legend, so there’s that). For style inspiration, I love @thefashioncuisine, she always infuses a bit of menswear into her looks, which I live for. And, if I’m trying to quench my wanderlust thirst, @travelnoire really hits the spot.

Which celebrity killed it in the fashion game this year? (photos encouraged!)

Zoë Kravitz had a great year—she’s my style inspiration for that casual, rock and roll look. She also dyed her hair platinum recently, and it took her to another level.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

Honestly, Michelle Obama is the ultimate best-dressed Washingtonian. She’s had so many moments this year, especially. It seems like she really hit her stride. She wore this all-black look to welcome the National Christmas tree a few weeks ago that was just [fire emoji].

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

I’m excited to see how this pajama-as-daywear thing plays out. In college, I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing pajamas in public, now, I’m like, “Wait. Can we make this a thing?”

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.

I’m encouraged by the shift we’re seeing to a more conscious consumerism…the trend of discussion on the unsustainability of fast fashion. We’re in a sea wave of change in the industry as climate issues and instant gratification are shifting how brands and designers present and offer their collections. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out! (Also… who can be mad about Athleisure?)

What item could you not live without this year?

It would be very hard to make it through the year without key menswear pieces- my constant uniform of trousers and tops by LA brand Chapter (@joinchapter …thanks, guys!)

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

I pretty much only wear stuff from the shop, so when I’m not scooping my own inventory buy, my go to’s online are Totokaelo and Oaknyc.com. My favorite non-apparel store would be Goodwood.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Meeps/Treasury is always a fave, and Tara does such an amazing job with Los Gitanos (which doesn’t have a brick and mortar home at the moment), @losgitanos_vintage.

Best DC place to style watch?

I don’t get out much past 14th Street, but I’m always so enamored by the great style that comes through the shop!

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

Those who dress as a creative extension of themselves… They don’t take themselves, or the criticism of others, too seriously!

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016?

2016 was a good year for fashion. I welcomed the general shift towards minimality and a refreshed focus on form and detail. When it comes to fashion, there’s always room for a little drama, and I love seeing it reflected in fine details. When it comes to my least favorite…By no means are over-the-knee boots an awful trend, but I think they’ve run their course. I’m hoping to see a new silhouette take the stage next year.

What item could you not live without this year?

This year, it was definitely all about my Apple Watch! It’s a simple device, but it kept
me just that much more organized. I’m a huge fan.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

When it comes to DC, there are too many to name them all, but Kaleidos, Redeem, Salt & Sundry, and Sophie Blake take the cake! Zara and Need Supply are my online shopping staples.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Los Gitanos Vintage

Best DC place to style watch?

I like to style watch wherever I go! A lot of stylish people walk through the doors of 52 O St Studios where DeNada is located, but fashion in DC isn’t concentrated in one area. I end up spotting fashion everywhere, even the most unexpected places.

Michelle Obama. Her final year as FLOTUS was nothing short of amazing. Her grace and style are unmatched. Watching her make such memorable and classic fashion statements has been an absolute joy over the past 8 years.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

This is a tough one, because there are a growing number of Washingtonians with amazing online presences, but at the top of my list this year are Amy Vong, Cassidy Karakorn, and Violetta Markelou.

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

Fashion month comes and goes so quickly, but leaves me with so much inspiration. So, I’m always excited for the fall shows. The art of fashion never ceases to amaze me, and it’s incredible to watch the work of so many designers come to life every year.

Favorite – Pussy bows.  Also, love all the rainbows, glitter, fluffy fur and pompom accents on everything. Somehow wearing these trends has made me feel sophisticated despite their homage to gaudy childhood dress-up.

Least favorite – Life of Pablo = sucker

What item could you not live without this year?

My Bucketfeet sneakers. Most comfortable shoes I have ever owned.  I have worn them more than anything else thanks to my rescue pup needing many daily walks!

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

First I want to note that I was sad to see two of my favorite places in DC closed their doors this year.  Thank you to Sherman Pickey and Nomad Yard for being amazing fashion resources over the years.  I hope we will see Nomad Yard with a new space again soon!

My favorite spots to shop in town are Zadig and Voltaire at CityCenterDC, Steadfast Supply, Brimble & Clark and Ella-Rue.

Also, I recommend style watching at the new MGM National Harbor – so far what I have seen has been conversation worthy.

Lets talk trends. Favorite/least favorite of 2016.

Favorite: I loved some of the more dramatic trends: off the shoulder tops, exaggerated ruffles, etc. This year was the year to really just have fun with fashion and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Least favorite: I love a wide leg pant or a dramatic flare jean, but I get really confused when I see pants that are dragging on the floor and not hemmed. Tailors, always a major key.

What item could you not live without this year?

I scooped up a quilted leather black Tory Burch bag early this fall, and it just makes me look so much more polished and put together. I pretty much wear it everyday.

What is your favorite place in DC/Online to shop?

Locally, I love Lynn Louisa in Georgetown and South Moon Under in Clarendon. Online, I frequent Shopbop and ASOS.

Your favorite thrift/vintage spot in the city?

Reddz Trading is my favorite consignment shop in the city. I can snag the high-end brands I dream about while on a real-girl budget.

Best DC place to style watch?

It’s pretty out of the way from my apartment, but I’ll head to Bloomingdale or Shaw to work during the day and just watch all of the creative, stylish folks roll into a coffee shop throughout the day.

I feel like I find a new favorite blog every month, but right now I’m a big fan of Sivan Ayla because she’s got tons of personality, and my girl Dana of Pink Champagne Problems because she’s a total rockstar and has been able to grow her brand immensely over the last few months!

Must click on Instagrams?

@colormecourtney is one of my favorites. It’s just a super fun, colorful feed, and you’ll pretty much want to be her best friend after seeing her bubbly personality and fun videos.

In your opinion, who are the best-dressed Washingtonians?

This is a tricky question because I’m surrounded by fashion bloggers on a regular basis, but Desiree (founder of Nomad Yard) and Anchyi from Anchyi Adorned are such fashion risk-takers and always look so amazing!

It’s almost 2017! What fashion-centric things are you excited about?

I’m excited for pantsuits to become a little more jazzed up next year, and be a major fashion statement. Thank you, Hillary!

AND THAT IS THAT GUYS. See you all on the 2017 Style flipside!
