This Thursday (Hurricane Sandy has postponed the High Heel Race from Tuesday to this Thursday) marks the 25th anniversary of the annual High Heel Race in Dupont Circle. To kick off the festivities we invited the bartenders of Number 9 – and DJ Shea Van Horn – to model their best heels for BYT.
What started as a small event among gay men has now grown into a city-wide celebration that clogs 17th Street, NW with thousands of spectators. Yes, it is mostly gay men who participate but everyone – gay or straight – turns out for the spectacle.
The race features dozens of men in high heels and elaborate costumes racing between Church Street and Q Street, NW at 9:00pm sharp the Tuesday before Halloween. While the race itself only lasts a few minutes, the real show is the two hours before start time. It’s then that contestants strut up-and-down 17th Street to show the audience their creative costumes. Get there early for a good view.
