Profs and Pints presents: “Trump’s Two-Faced War on Terror,” with Stephen Tankel, associate professor in the School of International Service at American University and an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security.
Donald Trump made defeating terrorism one of the defining themes of his campaign for president, and his election on a hyper-nationalist America First platform naturally raised the question of how U.S. counterterrorism would change under him.
If a satisfying answer to this question appears elusive more than two years into Trump’s time in office, it is because his administration’s counterterrorism policies have been Janus-faced. One face consists of policies that Trump inherited from his predecessors and which can be defined as actual counterterrorism. These policies may have evolved under a Trump administration, but they still exist within a traditional counterterrorism paradigm. The other face is faux counterterrorism. These policies, such as the “Muslim ban” and using U.S. forces to pillage Syrian oil, masquerade as counterterrorism, but are really intended purely to serve political and ideological objectives.
Come learn in detail about these two approaches to counterterrorism, and the distinct threat to national security posed by faux counterterrorism, from Professor Stephen Tankel, an expert on terrorism, counterterrorism, security assistance and cooperation, and security and military affairs in South Asia. His analysis will be based on extensive experience that includes a former position as a senior adviser at the Department of Defense, field research in Afghanistan, Algeria, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Tunisia, and the Balkans, and his authorship of works such as With Us And Against Us: How America’s Partners Help and Hinder the War on Terror.
Professor Tankel will discuss how policies that can be termed faux counterterrorism fit into a wider pattern of rhetoric and actions that risk undermining actual counterterrorism efforts against groups like the Islamic State. They also may actually enable white supremacist terrorism domestically and globally. Recognizing the two faces of our current counterterrorism policies is essential not only for making sense of current U.S. efforts, but also for addressing the threats that faux counterterrorism policies pose to American ideals. Event Details
Profs and Pints presents: “Sex, Love, Orgasms, Marriage, and Evolution” with Rui Diogo, associate professor of anatomy at Howard University’s College of Medicine and resource faculty member at George Washington University’s Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology.
For far too long, scholarly research on sex and love was based on the researchers’ personal prejudices or on pseudo-scientific ideas divorced from scientific observation. Today, fortunately, we are in the process of gaining a more objective understanding of how sex, love, and marriage have evolved throughout human history. Researchers from fields such as psychology, neurobiology, anthropology and evolutionary biology are using archeological research into extinct human groups, studies of primates and other animals, and comparative studies of various subgroups of modern humans to gain a much better understanding of how couples end up on the alter or what takes place under the sheets.
Join Professor Rui Diogo, who previously enthralled Profs and Pints audiences with his talks on evolutionary medicine and on evolution and racism, for a fascinating discussion of the findings of such research. He’ll take up longstanding questions related to nature versus nurture and clear up confusion rooted in racism, sexism, and other prejudices. He’ll discuss how culture might lead to differences in ability to reach orgasm, and how sexuality was since long an obsession of organized religions and continues to be a cultural taboo. Young children see adults close their doors to ‘do it’, as if it is a horrible, forbidden act, and the empirical evidence shows that parents’ promotion of such thinking has negative implications throughout life.
Professor Diogo also will describe how various social changes, such as the rise of capitalism, have influenced human sexuality, and in particular had allowed love to conquer marriage, for the better or the worse. He’ll also show how homosexuality occurs naturally in other species, not being unique to humans or anything ‘unnatural’, and how monogamy may be mainly a social construct mainly related to humanity’s shift from hunting and gathering to a more sedentary lifestyle with the rise of the first cities.
Profs and Pints normally allows audience members under 18 if they’re accompanied by an adult, but you’ll probably want to leave the kids home for this one. You might not emerge from the talk a better lover, but you’ll probably end up being a more thoughtful one. Your ancestors up in the trees missed out on such learning opportunities. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts about 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself sufficient time to place any order and be seated and settled in. )

Sam Amidon
In his decade-long career as a recording and touring musician, singer and multi-instrumentalist (banjo, guitar, fiddle) Sam Amidon has always managed to create work that’s utterly original, even when, as on previous discs, he was digging through the sounds and stories of traditional American music.
On his latest project, Amidon says: “Fatal Flower Garden is my tribute to the elusive spirit of Harry Smith and to his wondrous Anthology of American Folk Music. Harry Smith believed in the secret connections and mysteries that existed in culture … whether it was the feeling of Thelonious Monk’s rhythmic phrasing; the patterns in string games and Ukrainian egg painting designs; the wild fiddle tunes; or the epic folk ballads. He understood American Folk Music to be a wildly heterogeneous category that included multiple cultural, racial, and linguistic elements.”

Profs and Pints presents: “Understanding Therapy,” a guide to how to find psychological help and get the most from it, with Jeremy Steglitz, clinical psychologist in Washington DC and former teaching fellow at Northwestern and Yale.
‘Tis the season to wonder if therapy might be a good idea. With the holidays and winter approaching, it’s not uncommon for people to feel especially “off”. On the whole, anxiety and depression have been on the rise—especially among millennials in urban areas like DC—with burnout, financial stress, social media, loneliness, and even noise pollution being just a few contributing factors.
But finding a therapist in a place like metro Washington DC can be challenging. The process often brings up questions and concerns that aren’t widely discussed outside a therapist’s office, creating a catch-22 for those who have not found a therapist already. Regardless of whether you think you might benefit from therapy or you are just trying to guide someone you know who might need help, you’ll benefit from this introductory talk about therapists and the therapy process.
Drawing from the research literature and his own experiences, Jeremy Steglitz will tackle many of the common questions that patients have, such as: Is my therapist right for me? What am I supposed to share in therapy? How do I know if therapy is working? He will suggest ways to decide if a therapist is good fit, and demystify the types of psychotherapies out there, discussing whether it matters what type a patient chooses. He’ll also talk about what a “typical” session looks like, and how to think about “therapy success” and when and how therapy should end.
You’ll walk out a better-informed consumer, and better able to seek help for yourself or advise others on how to get it. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.)

Profs and Pints presents: “Meet the Snow Maiden,” a discussion of Russia’s beloved winter folktale with folklorist Philippa Rappoport of George Washington University.
Having captivated Profs and Pints audiences with her talks on mermaids and netherworlds, folklorist Philippa Rappoport is back with the perfect talk for the approach of the winter solstice.
In winter Russians transfix their children with the folktale of Snegurochka–the Snow Maiden–a girl made out of snow. Her story has inspired a symphony, a ballet, and elaborate costumes, and is at the center of rituals through which Russian peasants ushered the long winter season in and out of their lives.
Duck into the cozy Bier Baron Tavern to hear Professor Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, tell the tale of the Snow Maiden and of her emergence not just from snow, but traditional Russian culture. Her talk will draw connections between the beloved folktale and Christmas, Chanukah, and other winter solstice celebrations. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Profs and Pints presents: “Robert Frost’s Winter,” with Michael Manson, former lecturer on literature at American University and past president of the Robert Frost Society.
“Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.”
Thus begins “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” which ranks as one of the most popular American poems of the 20th century and helped cement Robert Frost’s status as of one of our nation’s most beloved poets. As we approach the darkest evening of the year, come to the Bier Baron Tavern for a talk that will have you delighting in Frost and embracing winter, the subject of several of his poems.
Winter challenges modern urban Americans less immediately than it did Frost, who owned several New England farms. Yet the questions Frost raised through the metaphor of winter remain vital. Are humans meant to live and thrive on this planet, or is existence some cruel joke? How do we explain human resilience, the ability to keep pushing through despite the odds? Is there some force above us, in life itself, or some stubbornness at the heart of being human? What does it mean to thrive?
Frost raised questions like these in his poetry without answering them. For him, the answers are to be found in the process of making. Whether we’re making poems, keeping gardens, playing sports, building careers, or raising families, we are all turning chaos into order. “Strongly spent,” Frost says, “is synonymous with kept,” and he is inspired by those times when humans spend their lives strongly and thus keep them.
Come hear Michael Manson, a veteran scholar of Frost, read and discuss some of Frost’s poems on winter and other subjects. He’ll cover some of Frost’s best-known poems—“Stopping by Woods,” “Desert Places,” “The Wood-Pile”—as well as lesser-known works such as “Afterflakes,” “Questioning Faces,” and “Good-by and Keep Cold.” Whether you walk out with miles—or just a few blocks—to go before you sleep, you’ll leave with a different perspective on the season ahead. Profs and Pints presents: “You Better Watch Out,” a look at terrifying holiday folklore around the world, with Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman, former instructors at The Ohio State University and co-founders of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
Today, the December holidays are all about joyous magic, warm evenings curled by the fire, and celebrations of the good in the world. Traditionally, however, the winter season also ushers in the terrors of the dark and the cold, teaching us to bar doors, whisper warnings, and, above all, to be “good for goodness’ sake.”
While many are now familiar with the holiday terror of the Krampus, this talk will explore a few less familiar, but no less frightening, folkloric characters of the season.
You’ll hear tales of the Icelandic Jólakötturinn, a gigantic cat that devours naughty children, and learn how to best the Welsh Mari Lwyd, a skeletal horse with a taste for song and poetry. You’ll get to know the Eastern European Christmas witch Frau Perchta and trace the history of the sometimes mischievous, sometimes terrifying Yule Lads and their monstrous mother, Grýla.
Join Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman, who in October gave a sold out Profs and Pints talk on witches in the Grimms’ fairy tales, as they explore the scarier holiday traditions around the world. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.)

Profs and Pints presents: “Wintery Fairy Tales,” an evening among ghosts, snow queens, and friendly bears, with Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman, former instructors at The Ohio State University and co-founders of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
As cold winds whip through your hair, and winter’s chill bites your skin, there is little more inviting than a warm cup of tea, a cozy blanket, and a good fairy tale.
Join two engaging folklorists for a magical evening of favorite winter tales. You’ll explore realms known only to the winds, search for a kingdom of ice, and ride a polar bear. You also might find strawberries in the snow, and perhaps encounter a ghost or two.
Winter folklore often serves the dual purpose of emphasizing the dangers of the season and offering hope and possibility in the midst of the darkness. In Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” a young girl survives fierce winter magic and rescues her best friend. Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe’s “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” features a romantic quest through ice and snow, while the Japanese stories of the Yuki Onna warn of the perils of wintery love.
Sara and Brittany will guide you through these tales and more, demonstrating the cultural power of these stories that teach hope and caution in a frozen landscape. (Advance tickets: $12. Profs and Pints presents: “How Dickens ‘Invented’ Christmas,” with John Pfordresher, a professor of English at Georgetown University who has taught courses on Charles Dickens for 50 years.
Only an unrepentant Scrooge would say “bah humbug” to this evening with Professor John Pfordresher, who, along with extensively researching and teaching Charles Dickens, curated his university library’s 2012 exhibition, “Dickens at Georgetown.”
We’ll start our scholarly journey through time in December of 1843, just before a Christmas past. Chapman and Hall published a deluxe Christmas book by Dickens titled A Christmas Carol. Bound in cloth, with gilt edges, four color engravings and four more black-and-white wood cuts, and priced at a relatively low five shillings, it sold 6,000 copies before Christmas Eve. Critical response was largely rhapsodic. The already celebrated satirist William Makepeace Thackeray described the book as “a national benefit and to every man or woman who reads it, a personal kindness.”
Flash ahead to Christmas present. In the 176 years since its publication, this little book has achieved an unusual presence in western culture. The basis of many theater productions, films, and television shows, its characters, and some of their catch phrases, have entered in many ways into the ways that people celebrate the darkest days of the year and their hopes for brighter days ahead. Dickens, more than any other figure, transformed an old religious tradition into a season of compassionate care for those in need. The book emerged from his own indignation at the suffering of the poor he witnessed first-hand, and the callous indifference voiced by many of his contemporaries to those sufferings. Scrooge became the embodiment of a money-hungry capitalism Dickens had been attacking for years, and his radiant conversion became a model for a Christmas of personal generosity to others and convivial celebration of the pleasures of life.
Come hear Dickens and his immortal work discussed in a talk that will fill you with the spirit of Christmas present and looking forward to Christmases future. (Advance tickets: $12. Profs and Pints presents: “Nightmares Before Christmas,” a discussion of Krampus and other dark holiday lore, with William Egginton, professor of humanities and director of the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
(Tickets also available for a special 3pm matinee.)
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and if not a creature was stirring, it might have been because they were cowering under their bed covers, terrified. Come to the cozy Bier Baron Tavern for a discussion of the darker lore of the holiday season—the tales that inspire us to search our own souls and worry about the price we’ll pay for being naughty rather than nice.
The star of the talk will be Krampus, the hairy, horned, demon who accompanies Saint Nicholas in visiting homes in Germany, Austria, and other Central European nations every December 6th. Americans happily embraced the kindly Saint Nicholas, who brings toys and chocolates to deserving children, as our own jolly, red-suited Santa Claus. We were less willing, however, to open our homes to the evil Krampus, who lurks behind St. Nick’s white beard and robes and promises punishments to those less deserving of treats. He’s catching on now, however, as evident by the nation’s growing number of annual Krampus parades, including DC’s own, on H Street.
Professor Egginton, a scholar of horror in literature and popular culture, will summon up other frightening figures and dark lore associated with the holiday season. He’ll delve into the pagan roots of Christmas as a solstice ritual, and show how its early origins helped give the season a sinister side and inspire traditions such as coal in stockings. He’ll talk about that mean one, Mister Grinch, conjure up the ghosts of Dickens, and explore the growing genre of Christmas horror films. He’ll show how thrilling and scary antics often associated with carnival and Halloween have their place in Christmas traditions as well. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in.)

Our private Roaring Twenties room will include a dance performance followed by an expert taught dance class to get you started on the Fox Trot and the Charleston.

A 2019-2020 tribute to the best decade of music! Celebrate 2020 like it’s 1999!
Experience a New Year’s Eve event tradition like no other. To be honest, this may very well be the best time you have had celebrating a new year (we not lying!). Imagine getting decked out in your best fashion (throw on those fancy clothes you got from Xmas), and hitting the town to celebrate in style, but there is a twist, instead of dancing to the same music you hear all the time, join us as we get down to tunes from our favorite decade – the 90’s! Think Jay-Z, Biggie, Britney, Christina, Ace of Base, Sisqo, Nirvana, Backstreet Boys, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Beastie Boys, and so much more. This all goes down at one of DC’s favorite venues – the Satellite Room with one of the best crowds to bring in the new year with.
