Distinguished Belarusian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik performs Russian miniature works drawn from a single suitcase of sheet music that his family brought to the United States when they emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1990. A onetime pupil of Roman Totenberg, Kutik has distinguished himself as an artist who combines consummate artistry with intellectual rigor and a commitment to representing stories of the displaced. His “evocative” recordings (New York Times) have garnered widespread critical recognition (including a spot on the Boston Globe’s “Best of 2016” list) and popular support—including a #5 ranking on the Billboard classical chart.

Program includes works by STRAVINSKY, PROKOFIEV, SHOSTAKOVICH, and others, as well as new works by GITY RAZAZ and ANDREIA PINTO CORREIA (commissioned by Washington Performing Arts)

We’ll start with Two Shakes, a tiki expression of a whiskey based on the distilling techniques of Jack Daniel’s teacher. Then we’ll enjoy a Stolen Gold, a bracing mix of rye whiskey, yuzu, and herbal liqueur. We’ll finish up with an Everything Nice, featuring bacon-washed bourbon and a pleasant kick from jalapeño syrup and mole bitters.

Profs and Pints presents: “Jackie Robinson, Revolutionary,” an homage to the hero who broke baseball’s color line, with Richard Zamoff, professorial lecturer in sociology at George Washington University and director of the Jackie Robinson Project.

Every April 15th, every player, coach, manager and umpire in Major League Baseball wears the number 42. They do so to honor Jackie Robinson, who on that date in 1947 walked onto Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers’ first baseman and, in doing so, changed baseball and America forever.

Born into a family of Georgia sharecroppers and raised in poverty, Robinson never had much patience for racism, and he used his phenomenal baseball talent to fight it. Much more than just a baseball player, he was an American hero who challenged, educated, and encouraged America, ultimately forcing it to think differently about matters related to race. Roger Kahn, author of The Boys of Summer, wrote: “Jackie Robinson occupied center stage and wherever he moved, center stage moved with him.”

Robinson has been described as “a revolutionist in a baseball suit” and both a symbol, and catalyst, of change. Martin Luther King called Jackie Robinson “a freedom rider before freedom rides, a sit-inner before sit-ins.” In Ken Burns’ documentary on baseball, the essayist and culture critic Gerald Early said, “You can divide black-white relations in the 20th century into two parts—before Robinson and after Robinson.” Cornel West has called the Dodgers’ Ebbets field “one of the sacred spaces of American culture.” Major League Baseball retired Robinson’s number, 42, in perpetuity back in 1997. This past January 31 marked the centennial of Robinson’s birth, and he is being remembered and, in some cases, discovered by those who did not know of his legacy before.

Come hear Robinson’s life and contributions discussed by a scholar with a passion for the subject. Professor Zamoff teaches a class titled “Jackie Robinson: Race, Sports, and the American Dream,” and developed an annual Jackie Robinson lecture series. The Jackie Robinson Project, which he has directed for 23 years, travels to schools, libraries, and community organizations in several states to discuss the baseball legend’s impact as an informal civil rights leader. Professor Zamoff also serves as faculty advisor to the Jackie and Rachel Robinson Society, a GW student organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the Jackie Robinson legacy.

ver a two-decade career, Snow Patrol has carved out a unique place for themselves. Since their 1998 debut, Songs for Polarbears, which Pitchfork hailed as “an impressive piece of work,” their melancholy anthems of heartbreak and separation have mended hearts, and the band has racked up an impressive number of critical and commercial accolades, including 15 million global album sales, 1 billion global track streams, 5 UK Platinum Albums, and are Grammy and Mercury Music Prize nominated. They emerged as heartsore musical prophets in the shadow of grunge and shallow pop, striking a chord in the minds, memories and hearts of listeners over six groundbreaking, confessional albums.

Eyes Open, released in 2006, was the biggest-selling album in the UK that year; they went on to headline such festivals as the prestigious T in the Park. But after their Fallen Empires tour ended in 2012, band members — guitarist, vocalist Gary Lightbody, guitarists Johnny McDaid and Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, and drummer Jonny Quinn — decided to stop for a while.

“We were exhausted at the end of the tour,” says Lightbody. “We went from album to tour, album to tour for 10 years.

We needed to take a break. And it just kind of kept extending. It wasn’t that we planned to take six years off by any means.

“We all started living our own lives and realizing that we actually had lives outside of the band, a band that we still had an awful lot of fondness for and that we did want to come back to, I just perhaps needed more time than I first thought,” explains Lightbody.

“I do think the rest of the band would have been ready to record at any point over the last five years. But they never showed frustration or anger. Never did they say, ‘Hurry up and write the songs, mate.’”

In the interim, Quinn started a family and began putting in more

Connolly formed and fronted Little Matador, the band he started with a number of other prominent Irish and American musicians, including Dave Magee from Lafaro and Gavin Fox from Idlewild. Wilson signed on as the touring guitarist in Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel’s band Lieutenant, and produced a number of bands, including L.A. newcomers Broken Arrow. McDaid wrote songs and produced such diverse artists as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran and Pink, and executive-produced Kodaline’s third album, due out this year.

Lightbody put the finishing touches on The Ghost of the Mountain, the second album by his Tired Pony side project with members of Belle and Sebastian, R.E.M, Reindeer Section and Fresh Young Fellows. He then moved to Los Angeles and began writing songs for movies (including “This Is How You Walk On” for 2017’s Gifted), and doing a number of high-profile co-writes with Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and One Direction. Songs that weren’t pulled from his own psyche were less painful to craft, and went a long way into healing what he considered to be writer’s block.

And at his website (www.garylightbody.com) he posted 15 cover versions of favorite songs by the likes of Ryan Adams, Bon Iver, Tom Waits and Glen Campbell.

But something else unexpectedly stimulated his writing even more. Two years ago he quit drinking. “Drinking was the only place I could hide from myself and if I was drunk I wasn’t depressed, just the next day but that could be remedied with more drink.” But he didn’t want that anymore.

“I’d been writing songs for years about love, been down that road so many times before: love, the end of love, the beginning of love. Mostly the end of love, to be honest. And I just knew that this album had to be something different. I hadn’t been in a relationship for some time and had no material to draw on. I had to look both deeper inside myself and out into the wider world around me and both seemed to be in chaos.”

Which is what he did for Snow Patrol’s seventh album. Titled Wildness, it taps into something raw and primitive.

A meeting of the masters!

Blockbuster soloists Itzhak Perlman and Evgeny Kissin unite for an evening of chamber music on a grand scale. The eminence of the performers is matched by the prominence of the repertoire, including timeless favorites of the violin repertoire by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms.

Evgeny Kissin also appears this season in solo recital on May 21.
