Weekly Food News Round Up

Pretty much all the DC food news that you can stomach.

Save the Date and Save Room:

  • Soundbites, the annual fundraiser for D.C. Central Kitchen held at 9:30 Club, was a big success this weekend. Good food was had, good music was heard, and general good times were had all around. Check out our preview of the event, with photos from this year coming later this week.
  • The second-ever DC Grey Market was also held this past weekend at Local 16. The event featured 25 local food vendors selling homemade treats in an unofficial, but legal, market setting. Highlights? Cakeballs, cupcakes, crunkcakes, cookies, croissants, macaroons, seafood gumbo, pulled pork barbeque sandwiches, grilled cheese, pickles, yogurt and more.   • Shake Shack DC has officially been open for one week today, and the lines are still epically long. Check out Eater DC’s great pictures of opening day; this is pretty much what it looked like when I went for lunch one day last week, but at least now I can check Shake Shack off of my burger bucket list.
  • Speaking of BILBs, the food rumor that made us happiest this week: Z-Burger, of Glover Park and Tenleytown, may have plans to open a Georgetown location at 1424 Wisconsin Avenue. *cries happy tears* This could really add a wrench to the heated Shake Shack vs. In-n-Out vs. Five Guys debate.

  • Beyond burgers, DC can expect a new player to join trendy “team lobster roll” this week. Luke’s Lobster is slated to open its first location outside of New York City on Thursday, May 26 in Penn Quarter. The seafood shack will be serving up Maine-sourced lobster, crab, and shrimp rolls at 624 E Street NW. Check out their Twitter for up-to-date news on the opening.
  • After much opening buzz 2 weeks a go, SAX has settled into a new “no minimum charge policy” (reservations still required) and toned down their wall art. Check out our full report (with many, many, many great photos) here.

  • We’ve also gotten wind of another Georgetown newcomer and New York-transplant, Serendipity 3, which will open before Memorial Day at Wisconsin and M Street. These are the folks that put “frrrozen hot chocolate” on the map and also made a cameo appearance in the 2001 icky sweet film bearing the same name. We’ll probably stick with a frozen hot chocolate and skip the re-watch.

  • The second DC location of Tackle Box, featuring fish tacos, lobster rolls, and of course, nautical kitsch, will open on June 2 in Cleveland Park at 3407 Connecticut Ave NW.
  • Speaking of FISH TACOS, PS 7′s launches a new secret outdoor menu item, where diners al fresco have access three, overstuffed, Tilapia Corn Tortilla Tacos with crisp Cilantro Slaw and smoky Chipotle Sauce for just $12. To wash it all down, don’t miss PS 7’s Happy Hour specials every Monday and Tuesday with $3 beers, $4 glasses of wine, and $7 for the daily seasonal punch.

  • Sixth and Rye, DC’s first and only Kosher food truck, launched last Friday to loooooooong lines. They served up over 350 orders of corned beef and veggie sandwiches to great reviews, but there’s already some controversy over whether they’re truly “kickin’ it kash” (that is, meeting the laws of kashrut). While different religious authorities are still debating the final kosher verdict (in my experience, this can go on for a while, and the parties involved will likely ultimately agree to disagree), the truck will be back out for its second DC appearance this week—for now, it’s only out on Fridays—in Farragut Square.

  • Strawberries also hit the local farmers markets this week for the first time this season. If you haven’t already devoured your bounty of this springtime treat, check out Smitten Kitchen’s recipe for strawberry summer cake for some inspiration.

  • Pizzeria da Marco in Bethesda is still offering half price pizzas until May 31 to celebrate their grand opening. Check out our preview and get on over there.
  • Annnnd DC is apparently really into food on sticks. A local round up from The Express…just because.

Memorial Day Weekend Edition:

Memorial Day is basically synonymous with pool parties and barbeques, so plan your eating and drinking accordingly.

  • If you’re trying to party at home this weekend, check out these fun punch recipes from Room 11’s Dan Searing, who’s trying to bring back punch as the ultimate crowd-pleasing “populist” drink.
  • On Monday, check out Café Saint-Ex’s annual Memorial Day Chili Cook Off from 11 am to 5 pm. Metrocurean is judging and has all of the details here.

  • While you’re in the area, stop by Policy’s Local Craft Beer and Crab Festival from noon to 5 pm to kick off DC Beer Week. $18 cover gets you a choice of whole crabs or crab cakes, unlimited sides, and samples of local craft brews.
  • Jack Rose at 2007 18th Street NW will also be soft open this weekend. Check out our early bird preview of the highly-anticipated scotch and meat-heavy establishment. The official open will following in the coming weeks; and the rooftop bar officially opens on June 3.

General News Mezze:

  • This kind of creeps us out, but if you’re into burgers and…matching fingernails, meet your newest internet friend.
  • Non-traditional bloody mary makeovers, just in time for the long weekend. Yes, you can have brunch three days in a row.
