STYLE GUIDE 2012: THE NEW YEARS EDITION
December 16, 2011 | 9:00AM
Hello 2012! I have a good feeling about this year. A whole new year, that is 365 days and nights, I can now dedicate to choosing the perfect pair of film noir pumps (yes, they come in leopard print) or menswear chic tailoring (swooning over Pringle of Scotland’s high collars and bold geometrics for Spring 2012). While, yes, it’s true, DC is not necessarily exalted as the nation’s fashion capitol – it is our capitol – and we’ve definitely taken serious steps towards making it a fashion-forward kind of town. Whether its rushing up the congressional steps to endow your wisdom as a femme brillant or cruising down 14th Street in your black skinny jeans and morning after hair (heyyyyy!), you, women of DC, always find is time to get it together. Here’s a list of upcoming events, shops we love, films we fancy, basically, the best of 2012 excuses to get your glitz-on:

Mara Rooney has undergone the ultimate transformation to play tattooed punk-hacker, Lisbeth Salander, for David Fincher’s adapation of Swedish trilogy The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. With covers on Vogue, Dazed & Confused, and Wmagazine, as well as inspiring the latest H&M line, Rooney’s alternative style may be cause to trade in your holiday sparkles for renegade leathers before the year’s out.

Meryl Streep takes on her most iconic role yet as the “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Known for her strict, conservative policies, Streep sheds depth to the woman beneath the iron mask as well as reinvigorates the pussybow blouses Thatcher so famously made chic. The Telegraph covers her style and more here.

Opening night film at the Cannes Film Festival and France’s official entry for Best Foreign Film for the Academy Awards, French film-maker and actress Valerie Donzelli brings us Declaration of War (La guerre est  déclarée). I’ve heard this is heartbreaking, but it looks beautiful.

  • W.E. - February 12

Madonna writes and directs highly anticipated English drama on the 1930s and 40s style icons the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII). READ this great article by STYLEITE on the film: The Costumes in Madonna’s W.E. Are All Couture. The title pretty much sums it up.

  • Pina -February 24
  • A tribute to the legendary dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. Director Wim Wenders thrillingly captures the aesthetic of Pina Bausch’s greatest works. Not to mention the effortless elegance of a dancers wardrobe, channeling Chloe Spring 2011. Can’t wait to see this!

Fashion guru and glam girl,  Kelly Framel of the Glamourai posts PHOTOS (which we love) of current and vintage editorials. Framel also designs one-of-a-kind jewelry made from vintage gems and fabrics. A girls after our own heart.

Cheeky little thang – model/fashion blogger Bip Ling keeps yhu laughin with her interpretation of the industry:

Hey hey HEEEEEYYY. :D . bippy stylie style the catwalk show 4 diet coke / clothes show live 2011 ! hehe gimme that cat walk baby ! U R THE FASHION SHOW!!!!!

A site dedicated to Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and ALL the Amazingness of 90s runway fashion. I grew up in the 90s and still don’t understand it, lipliner, metallics, lots of skin. At least Kate Moss was born out of it & she gave us Top Shop, so really you can’t say anything bad now. Watch out – you may be here awhile.

This is a classic – you can’t go wrong.

Hands down the best place for dreamy spreads and vintage style. Rhiannon Leifheit’s witty writing and adorable pup keep you coming back for more. It’s not as common to find blogs that actually tell you a story vs just retwitter whatever the latest retumblr’d tumblr is. You will want to archive every new photo she posts.
