This Sunday, U Hall hosts Soundcheck by DYDC, most notably featuring one half of coke rap kings Clipse. Pusha T’s (along with brother Malice) silver-tongued odes to the pyrex and stovetop economy have always managed to rise above the oft-stale stories of mere hustling. Assisted heavily by Virginia Beach production duo the Neptunes, Clipse burst into the mainstream with 2002’s Lord Willin LP and the Grindin’ single. Over a an industrial beat atypical of usual crowded Neptunes fare, Pusha and Malice established themselves in 4 minutes as the leaders of the new school of clever crack quips. Clipse enjoyed modest success but mostly they cultivated critical acclaim via various mixtapes including the lauded We Got It For Cheap series. As Pusha T focuses on his solo career during a Clipse hiatus, he seems to be making the right power moves towards a more commercial viability. This includes signing with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music and rocking a salmon suit during his collaboration on West’s “Runaway” debut at the MTV Awards in 2010. With a full length LP on G.O.O.D. due later this year and an inevitable hefty marketing push from ‘Yeezy himself, catch the calm before the snowstorm this Sunday at 8PM at U Hall.
Pusha is joined by Da Phuture, Black Cobain, Gilbere Forte, Breezy and LV Da Function Boi this Sunday at U Street Music Hall – Doors at 8pm
