OFF! is a Los Angeles based hardcore punk band/ musical lovechild created by former members of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Burning Brides, Red Kross, and Rocket From the Crypt. I had a chance to talk the musical all star, Keith Morris about touring, music and bug repellant!
Shannon Yazurlo: So, how did you come up with your bands name?
Keith Morris: Well I used one of my older bands as a template. A black flag is considered the symbol of anarchy, and since this band isn’t focused on anarchy. We are just OFF! Like Chop your head off, and stuff but most of the time when you google us a bunch of information on bug repellent shows up.
Shannon Yazurlo: Oh, so has Off! played in Washington D.C. before?
Keith Morris: No but we have all toured and played this area many times before in different bands. I have probably played Washington D.C. at least a dozen times, usually at the 9:30 Club.
Shannon Yazurlo: That is such a great venue! You guys will love the Red Palace too.
Keith Morris: Yeah, we are down to play wherever. This is a new band and we are just exploring the entire frontier. We want to go out and play wherever we can for whoever wants to listen.
Shannon Yazurlo: That’s whats up. So what you consider your musical influences to be?
Keith Morris: I would say Van Halen, Queen, The Kinks, and heavy psychedelic stoner stuff. The template for this band is a cross between Led Zeppelins first album and Black Flag’s Nervous Breakdown EP.
Shannon Yazurlo: Word thats sick! So if you could create your dream tour package who you would bring out on the road?
Keith Morris: It’s funny that you ask that since someone asked the same question last night and their are just so many bands we would want to tour with; like The Beatles, The Who, Let is Bleed, Bad Brains, Revolver, the Rolling Stones, and Sticky Fingers. Except we would rather have it be a big festival like Coachella or Lollapollza where we could play with a lot of musicians like Deer hunter, Neon Indian, and the Oakland Raiders!
Shannon Yazurlo: …but um when did the Oakland Raiders become a band?
Keith Moris: They aren’t but it would be a festival so big they would be around!
Shannon Yazurlo: I can respect that.
