Hi All. This edition of NYC Best Weekend Bets has been carefully calibrated for maximum fun and minimum stress on your part over the course of the next few days. It features a little something for everyone (music, movies, free vodka opportunities, theatre, $1 PBR bars and more) and will be punctuated with inspirational images of Thom Yorke DANCIN’ since all of RADIOHEAD shows this weekend (and ever) are sold out, so you can use it as a consolation prize of sorts. Make the most of it.
Before we kick off though: do sign up to get this as a newsletter/tell all your friends to sign up for it too + follow us on twitter @BYTNYC so you can keep track of all the fun content to come.
ALSO! - we’re giving tickets away to GOVERNOR’S BALL festival + to the FIREFLY festival this week. You probably wan to win those.
OK, ready for the weekend now?
THURSDAY
- kick the almost weekend off right: enjoy some art and some free vodka at the (promising looking opening) of Laura Little’s PARADISE show (RSVP required)
- then get yourself some good karma points and save a puppy.
- If there is one thing/person we love here at BYT then that is David Bowie. Tonight, the 40th year anniversary of “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust” over @ Grand Victory (on 245 Grand) features PLENTY of Bowie idol worship AND pairs it with a PBR open bar. Not the most glamorous of drink pairings but hey-nothing not to like.
- Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra’s record-shattering Kickstarter campaign will be ending. To celebrate and thank the fans for making it happen, AFP & Gemini and Scorpio are throwing an epic (legal!) street party for the last six hours of the campaign. DO IT.
- OVER at Santos Party House Kitsune releases their American Compilation.
- shows wise:
- parteeeeeee like an up-n-coming hip hop (mega) star: Curren$y brings his JET LIFE tour to Webster Hall
- Thurston Moore and Bill Nace get all sorts of experimental @ Roulette
- and Apparat is @ Gramercy
FRIDAY
- Starting today through Sunday: “Because Bushwick is the new Chelsea and the Open Studios makes the Tate Modern want to cry” (we’re quoting someone here). It’s Bushwick Open Studios! All art, all Bushwick, all weekend.
- Movie op: Williamsburg’s Nitehawk Cinema presents Fire Walk with Me, which we are recommending because Lynch is a mad genius and even though this is probably some of his more inferior work, we sure love to stuff our maws while getting creeped out.
- like food? Bon Apetit’s GRUB CRAWL is this weekend. All over Brooklyn.
- Get ready for an evening of blissed out dance @ Glasslands, courtesy of a double whammy bill feat. XYLOS (check out this interview we did we them recently-ish) and new BYT favorites MS MR (download their lead single HURRICANE here). Tickets are a bargain $10 and still available (somehow).
- also a good show: Porcelain Raft are playing Mercury Lounge
- more dance: ROC-ELLE Records Fest is @ Sullivan Hall tonight.
- or enjoy some quality (And free) new wave/italo/disco with HAPPY HOUSE dance partytime @ Bell House
SATURDAY
- Early-in-the-day-freakout: 28 Days Later’s Danny Boyle directs the National Theater (UK) in a stage adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. What better man to bring him back to life. – Live, real-time screening at BAM Rose Cinemas 11 am – 24 bucks (22 for members)
- Summer=beer.cover bands.boardwalks (in an ideal scenario). All of this comes together at BOARDROCKIN’ at Rockaways. $3 cans of Brooklyn brewery brews to boot.
- Also outside but fancier: HORSES! are everywhere at the Veuve Cliquot Polo Classic
- more food: TASTENYC does it up in the Meatpacking district.
- Then, do something constructive for your (hopefully) burgeoning art career. Are you an artist? Living in Brooklyn? Check out Brooklyn Museums Idol-style contest in which, wait for it, THE WINNER GETS A SOLO SHOW.
- Almost-at-sunset-freakout: starting Friday through June 7th BAM is playing all sorts of movies seminal krautrockers Tangerine Dream did scores for and TONIGHT! AT 6:50PM! they’re showing LEGEND, which you may remember as the Tom Cruise in a loincloth/unicorn/Mia Sara post Ferris/Tim Curry as the devil 80s masterpiece.
- Did you major in Russian Literature (or wish you majored in Russian Literature for that matter?) – Well, READ RUSSIA is the literary happening for you. Schedules, venues etc-all here.
- shows wise:
- Lemonade, Teengirl Fantasy and Elite Gymnastics are all @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
- Also-Lauryn Hill is playing the Highline Ballroom. These days, you never know what you’ll get from Ms Hill, but it is always fun hoping she’ll play nothing but “Ex Factor” AND “That Thing” on repeat, right?
- and if you’re willing to brave a trip to Jersey – GOGOL BORDELLO may be worth it.
SUNDAY
- If you haven’t had enough Art, Brooklyn and Art in Brooklyn this weekend, check out the closing day of BROOKLYN BEAT festival.
- then go to the Brooklyn Flea or something, the weather’s nice and you need a new armoire (I think)
- Azealia Banks is super sold out @ Bowery Ballroom but we do encourage you to troll the secondary market for this-should be pretty much the very definition of “super fun”.
- or-party over at Dekalb Market with a Fixed + The Dog & Pony presented HOLY GHOST DJ set + Blondes live. Good times.
