photos used in installation: Dakota Fine
behind the scenes photos of Dakota taking photos: Julia Benton
When we decided to partner up with the Newseum to throw the “holiday party to start all 2010 holiday parties“ the first thing we thought after we took in the massive screens and amazing projection technology the space has on offer was that “we have to do some sort of a photo installation/animation here”
So we decided to create the ultimate (or as close to ultimate) BYT 2010 DC Holiday Card and have our very own Dakota Fine shoot it, and our graphic designer/genius Erik Loften create it.
So- we stocked up on vitaminwater, smirnoff and champagne (fuel of the gods) and invited (literally) hundreds (and could have probably invited thousands) of our favorite 2010 DC people to stop by the Gibson Guitar Showroom and have their snapshot taken one Saturday, and famously, and almost unbelievably they did. We shot: chefs, musicians, djs, artists, writers, bloggers, curators, photographers, fashion designers, gallery girls, dancers, trailblazers, and even some DC United Players in what turned out to be one of the best days we’ve had in a while: as cliche as it sounds, the room was brimming with DC love and well, we loved it.
You can see the final product of our labors THIS FRIDAY, AT OUR “ALL ACCESS” HOLIDAY PARTY @ THE NEWSEUM (TICKETS ARE $20 AND AVAILABLE NOW AND HERE) but we could not help but give you a little sampling of “behind the scenes” action at the shoot as well as just a handful of the final product photos (scroll below).
ENJOY.
AT THE SHOOT:
and now! lets looks at a teeny-tiny portion of the final results (we’re showing 40 photos here out of over 2000 that will be used, and will be made into an animation that will premiere on the big Newseum screen on Friday-as a sort of a holiday card from us to you)

PINK MAFIA.
Look at all those babes. Especially Morgan. Meow!
more masturbatory – byt or facebook?
I wanna crawl up inside Christylez’ afro and live there forever.
Wait, what? Did you guys just take a whole bunch of photo’s of the BYT staff to post on a large projector at the Newseum? That would be mindbogglingly narcissistic.
we actually took photos of hundreds of non-byt staff many of whom we’ve never even met before that do great things in dc: chefs, musicians, djs, artists, writers, bloggers, curators, photographers, fashion designers, gallery girls, dancers, trailblazers, and even some DC United Players. obviously the outtakes feature BYT staff (of 5) but then, someone had to work that day, didn’t they?
I wish BYT would have actually taken pictures of just the staff, projected them at the Newseum, and told critics to “fuck off.” Start your own fucking blog if you don’t like what you see here.
BARF.
I wasn’t being mean, I was just like “wait, what? Really? They didn’t really do just that did they?” until you said what was up, Svetlana.
I didn’t know who I was seeing. Geeeez.
i actually just copied stuff from the post above and reposted in my comment so …. reading posts before commenting can be helpful, maybe?
p.s. love to everyone. friday is going to be m.a.g.i.c.a.l.
nice photos and variety!
Will the rest of the outtakes be posted here or must go to Newseum to see show?
…For those that can’t make it to Newseum !
these photos have been edited into a christmas card video we’ll be showing tonight, but we’ll run the full album of these on Monday or Tuesday on the site
Why did this page open with notorious name-dropper Brian Liu?? He’s SOOOOOO DC. ugh..Now I’m in a terrible mood.
…although.. I am happy to see that the guy with the tree branch finally changed out of those red pants he wore everyday…
that’s great.
Does anyone do GREAT things in DC? You mean “cool” things.
everytime I visit this site, which isn’t frequently, I get so annoyed how cool these people think they are. I’m not on Facebook so I don’t know which is MORE masturbatory, but at least they let us post our annoyances here.
Where’s my comment about arrogant, name dropping Brian Liu? Dang…won’t post it? He’s a pot head reggae dj who bragged about the famous people he knows during every conversation I’ve ever had with him. Yawn.
If that guy is doing GREAT things in DC, then I’m not sure what GREAT is.
EVENT PHOTOS LIKE SHYTTE!
For the record: Brian Liu is a self-employed artist– a good measure of confidence (read: arrogance) is necessary for self-promotion/networking/making a living in his field. As far as greatness… IMHO, the documentary he made about landmines is pretty fucking GREAT. (I would tell you the name of it and of his co-director, so you can look it up, but I hear name-dropping is tacky.)
NO way. His annoying behavior goes beyond that documentary, which was his girlfriends brainchild (he dumped her after it was released but took the cred.)
Also, before he even made that movie he has been name-dropping and bragging! Everyone who knows him knows this. It’s obnoxious and no matter what kind of film you make it’s still obnoxious.
People who name drop and BRAG have no confidence! That’s why they try to draw attention to famous people or how great things are. It’s an attempt to make people feel BELOW them, and it’s obnoxious.
I don’t consider him to be an ‘artist’, unless name dropping and self promoting are arts
Brian Liu is a pretty swell dude. I went to the Montgomery County fair with him once and we rode rides and ate lots of fried food and we had fun. They had a goat with an extra set of horns and I had a corndog.
Where are all of the fabulously wonderful photos from Friday?!?!?!!?
THEY’RE COMING!
