Laugh Your Ass Off: DMV Comedy Shows in March

March is the time to get ready for Spring, with warm weather on its way and a hope for summer, not to mention St. Patrick’s Day. But with this hope for summer and warm weather comes some of the weirdest weather imaginable (like D.C. area weather isn’t weird enough). To help ease you through the anxiety for Spring and also to help you find something to do on good ol’ St. Patty’s day, we’ve rounded up some of the comedy acts and shows that’ll be blowing through the area this month.

Jon Stewart: March 1, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall—$49.50-$79.50

Well-known TV show host and 16 time Emmy award winner Jon Stewart is coming to Baltimore for his two-show comedy tour this month. Though he is best known for political satire on his Comedy Central talk show “The Daily Show,” Stewart started his career in stand-up comedy before making his way in front of the camera. He has starred in several television shows, such as Comedy Central’s “Short Attention Span Theatre” and MTV’s “The Jon Stewart Show.” You may also remember him co-hosting alongside Stephen Colbert for “The Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear” in 2010.

Barry Rothbart: March 1 and 2, Arlington Drafthouse—$20

Barry Rothbart has a very eclectic career full of comedy, filmmaking, and acting. He has recently made appearances on both the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Conan as well as on MTV’s “Punk’d.” He also helped write and starred in IFC’s show “Do Whatever” while also appearing in many other commercials and short films. Along with his rising stardom, Rothbart continues to do comedy and sketch routines around the country. He was also recently named one of the “Best New Faces of Comedy” at the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival in 2011.

Arnez J: March 1-3, DC Improv—$25

Arnez J is considered one of the hottest and funniest faces in comedy today, known especially for the physicality of his comedy acts. Before his comedy, Arnez was recruited to the Harlem Globetrotters but that ended shortly due to a knee injury. From there, he entered the Atlanta comedy scene which landed him a slew of television appearances, from Showtime’s “Comedy Club Network” and “Shaquille O’Neal Presents: All Star Comedy Jam” to his productions on BET and Comedy Central.

Popovich Comedy Pet Theatre: March 2, Warner Theatre—$35-$75

This more family-orientated event is lead by Gregory Popovich and his team of pets. Popovich’s pets consist of over 30 pets, all of which were once strays. Now, they travel around the world with Popovich and various other performers in juggling, balancing, and comedy acts.

Huffington Post DC Presents: DC Comics Live: March 3 and March 9, DC Improv—$10

This event will showcase some of DC’s local comedy talent and be hosted by Brandon Wetherbee, Assistant Editor of Huffington Post D.C. Performances by Tyler Richardson, Mariya Alexander, Haywood Turnipseed, Jr., Kyle Martin, Dana Bell, and Matty Litwack.

Jo Koy: March 7-9, DC Improv—$30

Jo Koy has made guest appearances several television shows, including“Chelsea Lately,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and various VH1’s “I love the 70’s, 80’s, and 90s” episodes, just to name a few. He was also apart of Carlos Mencia’s 2006 “Punisher Tour.” Now, he has two of his own comedy DVDs for sale on his website and tours the country on a regular basis, performing both improv and comedy acts.

The Lucas Brothers: March 8 and 9, Arlington Drafthouse—$20

Kenny and Keith make up this North Carolina born-and-raised brothers comedy duo. They have performed at the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival as well as on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and HBO’s “Funny as Hell.” They were also featured on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List.” The Lucas Brothers are currently developing a webseries, “The Super Late Morning Show” for Comedy Central as well as an untitled animated project for FOX.

Pablo Francisco: March 14-17, DC Improv—$28

Pablo Francisco is known around the world for his spot-on impressions of anyone, from celebrities to family members. He currently has three of his comedy specials released on DVD, “They Put It Out There,” “Ouch!” and “Bits and Pieces.” Along with his own comedy specials he has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Show Biz Show with David Space,” and “Mind of Mencia.” Francisco also has a huge Internet following from YouTube to Facebook and Twitter.

Ted Alexandro with Dave Siegel and Mike James: March 16, Sixth & I Synagouge—$18 in advance, $20 the day of the show

Ted Alexandro has performed on David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and The View as well as having two Comedy Central specials. He has also opened for Louis C.K. at Carnegie Hall and appeared on the television shows “Oz,” “Louie,” and “Dr. Katz.” Alexandro has performed in several different countries, such as Qatar, South Korea, and Holland. Dave Siegel appeared on Comedy Central’s “Laugh Riots,” CNN, MSG, and Fox as well as participating as a panelist on the Joy Behar show. Mike James is a D.C. native whose comedy has gotten him an opening position for Dana Gould, Tom Papa, and Christian Finnegan.

Flip Orley: March 20-24, DC Improv—$15-$17

Flip Orley is a hypnotist who relies partially on wit and partially on his volunteers to create a great show. As said in the Los Angeles Times, “the beauty of Orley’s show is that, because most of the humor comes from the volunteers, no two performances are alike.” Orley has performed on both “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Today Show.”

The Royal Comedy Tour: March 22, DAR Constitution Hall—$45-$75

The Royal Comedy Tour is starting their third annual tour titled “All Hail Stand-up” which will tour through 25 cities. The tour consists of four comedians, Mark Curry (HANGIN’ WITH MR. COOPER), Bruce Bruce, Sommore, and Earthquake. Together, these comedians create one of the longest running urban comedy tours, entertaining audiences with their social commentary and quick wit.

Funniest College Variety Showcase: March 27, DC Improv—$10

For the tenth year in a row, some of the funniest college students in the area will be gathering at the DC Improv to showcase their comedy skills. They will be competing to perform in the finals in April. Check the DC Improv website for a list of the students and the universities they’ll be representing at the show.

Duncan Trussell: March 27, Arlington Drafthouse—$20

Duncan Trussell is best known for his comedy writing and his name has shown up in quite a few places. This includes HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Funny or Die,” FOX’s “MADTV” and Comedy Central’s “Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time.” He has performed at the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival and hosts a podcast named “The Duncan Trussell Family Hour.”

Kevin Pollak: March 28-30, DC Improv—$22-$25

There isn’t much Kevin Pollak can’t do. He’s an actor, comedian, and master of the Internet. OK, maybe master of the Internet isn’t the best term but he has mastered the ways of the web with his two-hour streaming chat show named “Kevin Pollak’s Chat Room” where he talks with directors such as Jason Reitman and actors such as Paul Rudd. He also has a podcast called “Talkin Walken” where Pollack speaks for an hour as Christopher Walken. He has also stared in films such as “A Few Good Men” and “The Usual Suspects” as well as having a comedy special out on DVD named “The Littlest Suspect.”

Aziz Ansari-Buried Alive Tour: March 29-30, DAR Constitution Hall—$33-$43

Right now, Aziz Ansari is best known for his role as the wannabe player Tom Haverford on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.” But he also has an extremely active comedy career, performing around the country and at music festivals such as Bonnaroo. This year he kicks off his Buried Alive tour as well as having his newest comedy special “Dangerously Delicious” available now.
