Holy Empanada. It amazes me that so many dynamic flavors can be stuffed inside a savory pastry that could (and moving forward shall) fit in my purse. But, oh yes, magically it can be done as the owners of DC Empanadas food truck, Anna and Shawn Leis, have proven.
The lovely Anna—a former co-runner of a non-profit and triumphant breast cancer survivor—has always had an affection for empanadas. For nearly three years, she has been making them fresh daily using the only the best local ingredients.
The afternoon I went, I tried four. I’m indecisive and I like to eat. SO WHAT?:
- Speedy Gonzalez – A mild Cheese Empanada filled with Queso Blanco, Asadero Cheese & Mozzarella Cheese!
- The Badass – Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese
- Karate Kid – Pork and Fresh Veggies Tossed in a Sesame Teriyaki Sauce with a Kick!
- WMD (Weapon of Max Deliciousness) – Chili, Beans and Cheddar Cheese
The menu rotates daily, peeps, so be aware. Also, how awesome are these names? Alright, to the nosh: the Badass was badass; creamy buffalo chicken with the perfect bite of blue cheese. Anna created this one thinking that it wouldn’t sell but alas, it’s one of their #1’s. The WMD’s chili is chunky and fresh, none of that from a can BS. The Karate Kid had a sweet tang and follow up punch to it that I was really satisfied with. And finally, the Speedy Gonzalez was thick and cheesy and wrapped in a chewy, crunchy carb-tastic blanket of delight. Because who doesn’t love cheese and carbs? Seriously, WHO? All Emps come with a beautiful crisp chimichurri topper and hot sauce for those who need to light their mouth on fire. Wash it all down with a bottle of Cherrywine and for dessert try a homemade Whoopie Pie from Frenchie’s. The freshness and thought that goes into these empanadas make this labor of love one of my favorites.
