Heavy Rotation Video Of The Day: Lana Del Ray
September 19, 2011 | 5:00PM

We just can’t stop listening to these songs/watching these videos this week.

Today we kick off with Lana Del Ray, who looks like a Disney princess, dresses like a Nabokov heroine, sounds like a cross between Tennis and Feist, and sings about eternal topics of summertime boredom, sex, and good fitting jeanwear. In short: nothing here not to like.

Here are the videos for “VIDEO GAMES” and “BLUE JEANS” which will be the A and B sides respectively of her EP, which we can expect on October 17th. Get ready to develop a major crush.

BONUS: Her debut S/T album was released on iTunes in January 2010 (produced by vet David Kahne [known for his work with Paul McCartney, the Strokes, and Regina Spektor]) and has since been deleted–but ask around for it, since one of your friends may have it (Cale sent me my copy, which is perma-playing on my iPod right now).

Among my friends, we all swap stories of the when, the where, and the how we first discovered Ms. Del Ray. I was listening to a podcast and Video Games was played during the closing credits. Who was this creature with the heavily voice? I tried Shazam but I was unable to figure out the name of the singer. Eventually, I heard the song again at my favorite local coffee shop. I dropped everything and ran to the Barista to find out who sang the song. I immediately went to YouTube and watched the video…about 10 times. I have not done that since high school. J’adore Lana del Ray!

If you’re looking for more of her music, I’ve found that you can download her old self-titled album (that she’s tried to withdraw from the public) from her old label. http://is.gd/OOQHT8

Is her first album similar to Video Games? I ordered the single on the strength of one listen. Often, however, the first album isn’t quite what the later stuff is like. thoughts?

Her first album is a weird collection of tracks. There are some with that Video-Gamey soulful sort of sound she’s getting so much attention for at the moment , but then there are things which are more upbeat pop songs. There’s some good stuff on there though. Definitely worth picking it up for free at that link for as long as the record label is offering it like that…
