Dumplings exist in every culture in some form or another. Place a bready, pasta-like casing around succulent filling, steam it or fry it, and you have one of mankind’s most perfect creations. We’d heard of potstickers, pierogis, ravioli–all the standards–but specifically Himalayan
dumplings momos? That was news to us.
Enter Mad Momos, the brand-new eco-friendly restaurant, beer deck, bar and lounge centered in Columbia Heights, whose menu includes (but is not limited to) some seriously delicious dumpling options, available beginning December 11.
Right off the bat, we knew we’d feel right at home. The decor, while trendy and cool (marked by exposed brick interior walls and art from New York’s Lee Patrick Johnson), is comfortable and relaxed–vintage school chairs crop up from table to table and on both floors of the space there are couches for ultimate hangout comfort.
And while we were just dying to check out the menu, we had to take note of the gorgeous 19-foot-long bar made from repurposed wood. While there are only eight beers on tap, don’t let it it fool you; Mad Momos is incredibly focused on beer. They offer seven specialty in bottle-form and one in a can and have curated the options to represent some of their favorites, from the rare to those hiding right under your nose and of course they’ll be rotating seasonally.
The food is casual with a gourmet twist, involving international flavors. Starters include beer-steamed mussels and “Mad Wings” (their signature chicken wings in a special sweet and smoky glaze sprinkled with toasted cumin seeds), while their momos tie in flavors ranging hailing the Himalayas (“The Demazong” are a classic recipe involving house-ground beef and sweet onions with a fire-roasted tomatoes, fresh cilantro and green chili pairing sauce). Find yourself in rural America with the “Cedar Rapids,” which include ground pork seasoned with clove and thyme combined with apples and a dijon white-wine sauce.
But momos aren’t the only To-Order dish; beer-braised BBQ-chicken sandwiches, short ribs, scallops and a slew of vegan and heart-healthy options will keep you coming back for more. Oh, and did we forget to mention they serve a brunch with multiple limitless-mimosa options? Next time you’re in the mood for a weekend bite, head to Mad Momos and sample their sausage-or-quinoa-stuffed mushrooms, their bananas foster and Nutella pancakes, and their “Mad Creamy” grits with shrimp. You won’t be sorry.
Head upstairs to the lounge and prepare to find your new favorite hangout spot. Natural light streams through the windows onto what feels like your grandmother’s living room–there are vintage chairs, a large couch, floor lamps and, wait for it, board games. This area is a perfect example of the natural flow Mad Momos always strived for; it’s open airy, and flows from one room to the next (from here you can access the quaint treetop patio and the upstairs bar and beer deck).
……..Is it spring yet??? Either way, we know we’ll be here year-round.
