DATE NIGHT ALERT! Ice Skating Season Starts In DC!
November 28, 2012 | 10:30AM

The weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter…and it is so tempting to stay home, curl up in a fetal position and never EVER leave the house unless it is to go to another indoor space.
Well, no more of that.

With the Ice Skating season almost here, and 2 amazing new rinks opening this week it is time to  wake up, smell the crisp smoggy air of DC and head out, into a world of ice, non-recycled air and hot chocolate.

Some of the options include:

BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW: Georgetown Waterfront’s Ice Skating Rink IS NOW OPEN

Thanks Clark Construction for transforming the fountain at the Waterfront into an ice skating oasis. And not just any ice skating oasis-THE BIGGEST ice skating oasis in the area: The 11,800-square-foot rink is two-thirds the size of a full NHL ice rink. The release points out that the rink will be larger than Rockefeller Center’s and the National Gallery of Art’s. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The rates are $9 for adults; $7 for children, seniors and military. Skate rentals are $5. BONUS: this Saturday (4-7pm) is the “WINTER ON THE WATER” celebration, a collaboration between the Waterfront and the House of Sweden featuring: “continuous strolling entertainers, ice skating performances, choral singers, a St. Lucia parade, and artistic lighting effects, along with special food and beverages served outdoors by the restaurants of the Washington Harbour”

ALSO SO NEW: Canal Park’s Ice Skating Rink @ The Capitol Riverfront

2012 is the year of new ice skating rinks, and we are ok with that. Capitol Riverfront’s CANAL PARK one is open 7 days a week, admission is $8 for adults, and skate rentals are $3, with a number of awesome events like “Rock’n'Skate” etc planned for throughout the winter.

and of course… THE OLD FAITHFUL: The National Gallery of Art ICE SKATING RINK IS NOW OPEN

I love ice skating. And hot chocolate. And the jazzy music they play at the National Gallery’s rink. Thing I, however. do NOT love is: their rental skates. Which blow. But then, with the pavillion cafe and the sculpture garden right around, who cares? Prime hand holding territory too.

Now, just start thinking who you’re going to take.
