There is no doubt that the District will never be a Paris, Milan, Berlin or NYC, but we have to give credit where credit is due. The District hails a variety of people from the young to the beautiful, the intelligent and all that’s in between. These unique people bring a variety of style and fashion that ultimately fuel  the culture of the District. This column simply documents the different styles of those unique individuals who walk the city streets. As the great Alexander McQueen said himself, “It’s a new era in fashion – there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together.”

“I get emotionally attached to clothing as specific pieces remind me of special people, memories and places in my life. As a result I tend to gravitate towards quality fabrics and well-crafted, comfortable garments that I can wear year after year, but restyled in new ways to keep it fresh and fun.” Polles is the owner of Via Gypset; check out her shop here.

“My style is inspired by my love of mixing classic and edgy pieces together. I love the look that this unusual combination makes. I am also really intrigued and inspired by the ethnic wear of my ancestors … My favorite piece has to be my Nubian princess earrings. They make me feel powerful and beautiful each time I wear them!”

“My personal style changes daily depending on what mood I am in, where I am going and who I’m seeing. Even though this may sound broad, I keep consistency within each look by wearing similar styles of shoes and boots and a lot of black to ensure I remain true to myself.”

“I really love the romantic nature of the summer. I typically like to wear floral prints that have a fun shape to them. I’m also forever obsessed with wearing boots. Fall, winter, spring, summer, it doesn’t matter. Boots just compliment any outfit I’m wearing.”

“My style is all about the perfect fit and diverse colors. I love when my outfit makes my presence known without immaturely demanding attention. I’m a rebel but also very disciplined.”
