So my lady is taking me to Disney World for my birthday this weekend. She’s never been and I’ve been like 20 times (shocker), but it’s been quite a few years. Needless to say, I’m getting excited.
By 1971 the Beach Boys were at a pretty low point after a string of tepidly received albums. I mean even Pet Sounds, while critically acclaimed, wasn’t the chart topping successes they had hoped. They had the Smile fiasco and Brian Wilson going coo coo for cocoa puffs under their belt. They reactivated their own record label, got reinvigorated, and put out the excellent Sunflower album, only to again be ignored. The cover of the next album, featuring a drab painting of a slumped forlorn lone figure on a weary horse, iconically summed up the mood while the title Surf’s Up ironically hailed back to their 60s hey day. Yet this 17th album is arguably second only to Pet Sounds, featuring Wilson’s title track masterpiece. But today’s song is, of course, the gorgeous Bruce Johnston penned and sung Disney Girls (1957). I want this playing as I walk through the gates.
Wonderous. I picked up the ‘Surf’s Up’ LP in a used record store in Rhode Island.
“Take good care of your feet, (Pete). You better watch out what you eat, (meat).”
it’s like you knew
Cale is like seldom knows from good music, Svets.
I liked the unexpected singing at the end. The wah wah effect appropriate, too. But this is a trite song, altogether.
This record is fantastic. I dare say I like it better than Pet Sounds.
