With the recent release of The Beach Boys original Smile Sessions, it’s time for another round of praise for Brian Wilson’s genius. And deservedly so. But brother Dennis Wilson has a “lost” masterpiece up his sleeve as well. In 1977 he recorded Pacific Ocean Blue, a dense bluesy soulful work which critics loved and a handful of people bought. It then went out of print for 30+ years before being remastered and re-released in an expanded edition, including some material from the never finished follow up. On opening track River Song you get a healthy dose of Wilson’s gravelly alcohol ravaged voice, drum and keyboard work, and a crazy baptist choir, all lamenting his growing dislike of city living. He never did make it out of LA though, and drowned at Marina del Rey in 1983 after a long day of drinking.
